by His hand, and He made His angels prostrate to him, and He taught him the names of everything, and He caused him to dwell in Paradise, eating therein abundantly wherever he wished, and he was forbidden from a single tree; yet the trial did not cease to affect him until he fell into what he was forbidden from. And if the unseen were known, the Jinn would have known it when the Prophet of Allah, Sulayman (Solomon), may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died; they remained working for him for a year in the most extreme humiliation, not perceiving his death, and nothing pointed them to his death except the creature of the earth eating his staff—meaning it ate his walking stick. So when he collapsed, the Jinn realized—and it is in the codex of Ibn Mas'ud: "The humans realized"—that if the Jinn had known the unseen, they would not have remained in the humiliating punishment. And the Jinn used to claim before that, that they knew the unseen and knew what would happen tomorrow, so Allah tested them with that, and made the death of Sulayman a lesson for the Jinn.
