Volume 9 · Page 153His saying: 'Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son'

Translation · EN

16699 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us: 'Umar ibn Hammad narrated to us: Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: When the boy began to move, his mother, Asiya, showed him as an infant. While she was dandling him and playing with him, she handed him to Pharaoh and said: "Take him; he is a comfort of the eye for me and for you." Pharaoh said: "He is a comfort of the eye for you, but for me, no." 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas said: "Had he said, 'He is a comfort of the eye for me,' he would have believed in him, but he refused."

His saying, the Exalted: "Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us or we may adopt him as a son."

16700 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freedman of Banu Hashim, narrated to us: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us: Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: When Moses' mother gave birth to him, she nursed him until, when Pharaoh ordered the killing of the male children of that year, she resolved to do with him what Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, commanded her. She then placed him in a small chest and laid a bed for him inside it. Then she went with him to the Nile and cast him into it. Pharaoh used to sit at a place he had on the bank of the Nile every morning. While he was sitting there, the Nile passed by with the chest being tossed, and Asiya bint Muzahim, his wife, was sitting beside him. She said: "Indeed, this is something in the water; bring it to me." His aides went out to it until they brought it to him. The chest was opened, and there was a boy in his cradle. Allah cast His love upon him and made him compassionate toward him. His wife, Asiya, said: "Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us or we may adopt him as a son."

His saying, the Exalted: "Perhaps he may benefit us or we may adopt him as a son."

16701 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us: 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us: Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: Asiya said: "Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us or we may adopt him as a son. He is but a boy who does not understand; whoever caused this, did so in his childhood."

His saying, the Exalted: "And they did not perceive."

16702 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us: Shababah narrated to us: Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And they did not perceive," [meaning] the family of Pharaoh that he was an enemy to them.

16703 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us: al-'Abbas informed us: Yazid narrated to us: Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "And they did not perceive," he said: "Her mercy was cast upon him when she saw him, while they did not perceive that their destruction would be at his hands and in his time."

16704 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us: Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq: Allah says: "And they did not perceive," meaning, of what was to happen regarding what Allah intended for him.
