16818 - Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us: Musaddad narrated to us: Ghadir ibn Farhad narrated to us, who said: I heard Abu 'Imran al-Jawni saying regarding this verse: "And found besides them two women driving back (their flocks)," he said: They were restraining their sheep from one another.
16819 - Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us: Ishaq ibn 'Amr narrated to us: al-Sabbah ibn Muharib narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, regarding His saying: "Two women driving back," he said: They were preventing the sheep from the water.
His saying, the Exalted: "He said: 'What is the matter with you?'"
16820 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Thalj narrated to us: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us: Asbagh ibn Zayd al-Warraq reported: al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub narrated to us: Sa'id ibn Jubayr narrated to us, from Ibn 'Abbas: "He said: 'What is the matter with you?'" He said: He asked them: "What is the matter with you, standing aside and not watering with the people?"
16821 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us: Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq: "And found besides the people two women driving back their sheep from the water," and it was the water of Madyan. He felt pity for them and a sense of duty (hisbah) overcame him when he saw their situation and the people prevailing over the water instead of them, so he said: "What is the matter with you?" i.e., what is your situation that you are not watering?
His saying, the Exalted: "They said: 'We do not water.'"
16822 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Thalj narrated to us: Yazid narrated to us: Asbagh reported: al-Qasim narrated to us: Sa'id narrated to us, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "They said: 'We do not water,'" they said: We have no strength to crowd out the people.
16823 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us: al-'Abbas reported: Yazid narrated to us: Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "He said: 'What is the matter with you?' They said: 'We do not water,'" i.e., we are unable to water until the people have finished, then we follow and drink their leftovers.
His saying, the Exalted: "Until the shepherds drive back (their flocks)."
16824 - al-Husayn ibn 'Ali ibn Mihran al-Mituni narrated to us: 'Ali, meaning ibn Bahr, narrated to us: 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd al-Samad narrated to us, from 'Ata', from 'Ikrimah and Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "And when he arrived at the water of Madyan," that when Moses, peace be upon him, arrived at the water of Madyan, he found upon it a party of people watering, and he found besides them two women driving back (their flocks). They said to him: "Water." He said: "Is there no well here?" They replied: "A well that is covered in the winter and uncovered in the summer." So he came to the well and lifted a great rock that a hundred men could not handle. When he lifted the rock, the two women were amazed, and he watered for them.
