to him: "Will you not marry me to one of these two daughters of mine on the condition that you serve me for eight years?" So he did that. Thus, eight years were binding upon the Prophet of Allah Moses (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).
16858 - And through the same chain, regarding His saying: "But if you complete ten, it will be as a favor from you." Eight years were binding upon the Prophet of Allah Moses, and two years were a voluntary promise from him. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, fulfilled the promise on his behalf, and he completed them as ten. Sa'id said: "A man from the scholars of the Christians met me and said: 'Do you know which of the two terms Moses fulfilled?' I said: 'No,' and I did not know at that time. Then I met Ibn 'Abbas and mentioned that to him. He said: 'Do you not know that eight were binding upon the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and the Prophet of Allah would not diminish anything from it? And do you know that Allah was fulfilling on behalf of Moses the term he had promised? For he indeed completed ten years.' I then met the Christian and informed him of that, and he said: 'The one whom you asked and who informed you is more knowledgeable than you regarding that.' I said: 'Yes, and more honored and more perfect.'"
His saying, Exalted is He: "And I do not wish to put you in difficulty."
[16859] - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us: Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq: "'And I do not wish to put you in difficulty. You will find me, if Allah wills, from among the righteous,' meaning in good companionship and the fulfillment of what I have said." So he married him, and he stayed with him, sufficing him and working for him in the tending of his sheep and whatever he needed from him. He married Moses to Safurah and her sister to Sharafa, and he said: "Liyya," and they are the two who used to hold back [their flocks].
His saying: "That is between me and you; whichever of the two terms I complete."
16860 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us: 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us: Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, who said:
"That is between me and you; whichever of the two terms I complete," either eight or ten. "And Allah is Witness over what we say."
16861 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us: Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Moses said: "That is between me and you; whichever of the two terms I complete, there shall be no injustice against me."
His saying: "There shall be no injustice against me."
[16862] - And through the same chain, from Abu Ishaq, [who said] Moses said: "That is between me and you; whichever of the two terms I complete, there shall be no injustice against me." He said: "Yes." He said: "And Allah is Witness over what we say."
