who is steadfast upon the truth in this time of yours that you are in, then he is a stranger among the strangers in the practice of the people who were upon Islam during the time of the fatrah (gap between prophets) and were patient over what they were harmed with.

His saying, Exalted is He: "For what they patiently endured."

16987 - My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn Khalid al-Azraq narrated to us, Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Sa'id narrated from Qatadah regarding His saying: "For what they patiently endured"—he said: They were patient in obedience to Allah and were patient in refraining from His disobedience and His prohibitions.

His saying, Exalted is He: "And they avert."

16988 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Khalid narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak regarding: "And they avert evil with good"—he said: They repel evil with good.

His saying, Exalted is He: "With good, the evil."

16989 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abdullah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "With good, the evil"—meaning: They return a kindness to those who do evil to them.

16990 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj narrated to us who said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the saying of Allah: "And they avert evil with good"—he said: They repel evil with goodness; they do not requite evil with evil, but rather they repel it with goodness. He also said in another place regarding: "And they avert evil with good": They do not requite the evil with evil, but rather they avert the evil with good.

His saying, Exalted is He: "And from what We have provided them, they spend."

16991 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan Muhammad ibn 'Amr informed us, Salama narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said: In what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad, the freed slave of Zayd ibn Thabit, narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas who said: Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says: "And from what We have provided them, they spend"—they pay the Zakah while seeking reward for it. Its interpretation has preceded in Surah al-Baqarah, with additions to it.
