15901 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Hudbah ibn Khalid narrated to us, [saying]: Hammam narrated to us, from Qatadah, [who] said: The companions of the thicket are the companions of the trees, and they are the people of Shu'ayb.
15902 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Hisham ibn Khalid narrated to us, [saying]: Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq narrated to us, [saying]: Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "The companions of the thicket"—It was mentioned to us that they were the people of a forest, and the majority of their trees were this species [al-rum]. Their messenger, as far as we have reached information, was Shu'ayb; he was sent to them and to the people of Madyan. He was sent to two communities of people, and they were punished with two different punishments. As for the people of Madyan, the blast took them, and as for the companions of the thicket, they were people of thick, interwoven trees.
His saying (the Almighty): "When Shu'ayb said to them, 'Will you not fear [Allah]? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.'"
15903 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki narrated to us, [saying]: 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi', [who] said: Indeed, Shu'ayb, the brother of Madyan, was also sent to the companions of the thicket. They were a people from the inhabitants of 'Amur who followed the pasturing and vegetation in his time. When the lowlands dried up, they would return to the forest where they would summer; it was a thicket that contained a flowing spring. And indeed, Shu'ayb warned them, but they denied him.
