[His saying: 'A sign']
[The first interpretation]
15807 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, [saying]: Shababah narrated to us, [saying]: Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: 'A sign, that you may amuse yourselves,' [he said]: A structure.
The second interpretation:
15808 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Ahmad ibn Abi al-Hawwari narrated to us, [saying]: 'Ali ibn al-Fadl al-Lahabi narrated to us, [saying]: Muslim ibn Khalid al-Zanji narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: 'A sign,' he said: The sign is the construction of pigeon towers.
His saying: 'That you may amuse yourselves'
15809 - Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, [saying]: Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb ibn Shabur narrated to us, [saying]: 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' narrated to us, from his father, 'Ata': 'As for "on every high ground, a sign, that you may amuse yourselves," it is said: On every high place and viewpoint you build for amusement.'
15810 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us in what he wrote to me, [saying]: My father narrated to me, [saying]: My uncle narrated to me, [saying]: My father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn Abbas regarding 'that you may amuse yourselves,' he said: You play. It was also narrated from al-Dahhak and Qatadah the same as that.
15811 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, [saying]: Al-Muqaddami narrated to us, [saying]: Usaid ibn Habib narrated to us, [saying]: Al-'Ala' ibn 'Abd al-Karim narrated to us, from Mujahid, [who] said: No one is more similar in deeds to 'Ad than the nation of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He said: 'Do you build on every high ground a sign, that you may amuse yourselves?' For by Allah, they have [indeed] done so: 'And you take to yourselves palaces, that you may live forever.'
His saying, the Exalted: 'And you take to yourselves palaces (masani')'

15813 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Al-Himmani narrated to us, [saying]: Muslim ibn Khalid narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: 'And you take to yourselves palaces, that you may live forever,' he said: Pigeon towers.

١٥٨٠٧ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ، ثنا شَبَابَةُ، ثنا وَرْقَاءُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَوْلُهُ: آيَةً تَعْبَثُونَ بُنْيَانًا.

١٥٨٠٨ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْحَوَارِيُّ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ اللَّهَبِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الزَّنْجِيُّ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَوْلُهُ: آيَةً قَالَ:
الآيَةُ اتِّخَاذُ أَبْرِجَةِ الْحَمَامِ.
قَوْلُهُ: تَعْبَثُونَ
١٥٨٠٩ - أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ شَابُورَ حَدَّثَنَا عثمان ابن عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَطَاءٍ وَأَمَّا بِكُلِّ رِيعٍ آيَةً تَعْبَثُونَ فَيُقَالُ: بِكُلِّ شَرَفٍ وَمَنْظَرٍ تَبْنُونَ عَبَثًا.
١٥٨١٠ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنِي عَمِّي حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ تَعْبَثُونَ قَالَ: تَلْعَبُونَ وَرُوِيَ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ وَقَتَادَةَ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ.
١٥٨١١ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ، ثنا أُسَيْدُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، ثنا الْعَلاءُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ: لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ أَشْبَهَ فِعَالا بِعَادٍ مِنْ أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: أَتَبْنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِيعٍ آيَةً تَعْبَثُونَ فَقَدْ وَاللَّهِ فَعَلُوا: وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَخْلُدُونَ.

١٥٨١٣ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا الْحِمَّانِيُّ، ثنا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: تتخذون مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَخْلُدُونَ قَالَ: بُرُوجُ الْحَمَامِ.
