[The Second Perspective]
16992 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, ‘Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Jarir narrated to us, from Mansur, from Ja‘far, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr who said: When Ja‘far and his companions came to the Negus, he settled them and treated them well. When they wanted to return, those who had believed from the people of his kingdom said: "Give us permission, for we shall cross these seas and go to this Prophet, and we will renew our covenant with him." He said: So they departed and arrived at the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and they bore witness with him at Uhud, Hunayn, and Khaybar. He said: And none of them were injured. They said to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: "Give us permission so we may go to our land, for we have wealth there, and we shall bring it and spend it upon the Muhajirun (the Emigrants), for we see them in hardship." He said: So he gave them permission, and they departed. They brought their wealth and spent it upon the Muhajirun. Allah then revealed the verse regarding them: "Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because they] avert evil with good, and from what We have provided them, they spend."
His saying, Exalted is He: "And when they hear ill speech."
16993 - My father narrated to us, ‘Ubaydullah ibn Musa narrated to us, Israel informed us, from Mansur, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it... [up to His saying]: Peace be upon you; we desire not the ignorant." He said: These were people from the Jews who accepted Islam, and there were people from the Jews who, whenever they passed by them, would revile them. So Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, revealed these verses regarding them.
16994 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj informed us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam narrated to us regarding the saying of Allah: "And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it..." to the end of the verse. He said: These are the People of the Scripture. When they heard the ill speech that the people had written with their own hands alongside the Book of Allah and claimed it was from Allah, whenever they heard those who had accepted Islam passing by them while they (the Muslims) were reciting it, they would turn away from it. They used to do that before they believed in the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, because they were believers according to the religion of ‘Isa (Jesus). Do you not see that they say: "Indeed, we were, before it, Muslims"? They were holding fast to it, and when the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came, they accepted Islam, and they had their reward twice for what they patiently endured the first time, and they entered into Islam with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
