Translation · EN

His saying, Exalted is He: "Ill speech."

16995 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Harithi narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak regarding: "And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it," he said: It means idolatry (shirk). Something similar was narrated from Makhul.

His saying, Exalted is He: "They turn away from it."

16996 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-‘Abbas informed us, Yazid narrated to us, Sa‘id narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it," meaning they do not contend with the people of ignorance and the people of falsehood in their falsehood; that which has come to them from Allah has deterred them from that.

His saying, Exalted is He: "And they said, 'For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds.'"

16997 - My father narrated to us, Yahya ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, Jarir informed us, from Mansur, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, 'For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds.'" He said: There were people from the People of the Scripture who accepted Islam, and the polytheists would harm them. They would turn away from them, saying: "Peace be upon you; we desire not the ignorant."

His saying, Exalted is He: "Peace be upon you; we desire not the ignorant."

16998 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa’ narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "Peace be upon you; we desire not the ignorant," referring to the Muslims from among the People of the Scripture.

16999 - ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman ibn al-Ash‘ath narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali narrated to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, who said: This was revealed regarding ‘Abd Allah ibn Salam. When he accepted Islam, he wanted to inform the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, of his high standing among the Jews. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, send for my people and ask them about me." So he summoned them and said: "Inform me about ‘Abd Allah ibn Salam." They replied: "He is our master and our most learned man." He said: "What do you think if he believes in me and accepts me as truthful? Will you then believe in me and accept me as truthful?" They replied: "He will not do that. He is too scholarly among us to abandon his religion and follow you." He said: "Come out, O ‘Abd Allah ibn Salam." So he came out and said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah." He pledged allegiance to him, so they turned against him and began to insult him, while he kept saying: "Peace be upon you; we desire not the ignorant."
