His saying, Exalted is He: "And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided."

17005 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa’ narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided," [meaning:] those for whom guidance and misguidance have been decreed.

His saying, Exalted is He: "And they say, 'If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept from our land.'"

17006 - My father narrated to us, ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Munib narrated to us, Abu Mu‘adh al-Nahwi narrated to us, from ‘Ubayd ibn Sulayman, from al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept from our land," [he said]: This is the statement of the polytheists among the people of Mecca.

17007 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘d ibn ‘Atiyyah informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to us, my uncle narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And they say, 'If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept from our land,'" he said: They were a group of Quraysh who said to Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: "If we follow you, the people will snatch us away." Then Allah said: "Have We not established for them a safe sanctuary?"—the verse.

His saying, Exalted is He: "Swept from our land."

17008 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam narrated to us regarding His saying: "Swept from our land," he said: They used to raid one another.

17009 - ‘Ubayd ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Hamzah informed us in what he wrote to me, Abu al-Jamahir informed us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir narrated to me, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept from our land," he said: It was mentioned to us that a group of people from the people of Mecca said: "We know that you are the Messenger of Allah, and that what you say is the truth, but we cannot abandon our homelands." So Allah revealed this verse.

17010 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-‘Abbas informed us, Yazid narrated to us, from Sa‘id, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Have We not established for them a safe sanctuary?" He says: Were they not safe in their sanctuary, not being raided and not fearing?

17011 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman narrated to us regarding the saying of Allah: "A safe sanctuary," he said: We have made it safe for you. He said: It is Mecca, and they are Quraysh. He then said: "And [while] people are being snatched from around them." He said: They used to raid one another.
