It took them up to their knees, then to their waists, then to their shoulders. Then he said: 'Come forward with their treasures and their wealth.' He said: So it brought them forth until they could see them. Then Musa gestured with his hand and said: 'Go away, children of Levi,' and the earth leveled over them.
17156 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Harawi narrated to us, Muhadir narrated to us, al-A'mash narrated to us, from al-Minhal, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Korah was of the people of Musa and was his cousin. He pursued knowledge until he amassed a great deal of it. He remained in that state until he acted insolently toward Musa and envied him. Musa said to him: 'Allah has commanded me to take Zakat, one dirham from every forty dirhams.' He refused. He said: 'One dirham from every hundred dirhams.' He refused. He said: 'He cannot bear this,' until he reached a thousand. He said: 'In every thousand dinars or dirhams.' He said: 'Musa wants to consume your wealth, so what shall we do?' They said: 'Our command follows your command.' So they sent for a woman from the prostitutes of the Children of Israel and said to her: 'We will give you your asking price if you testify against Musa that he committed adultery with you.' She said: 'Yes.' He said: Korah came to Musa and said: 'Gather the Children of Israel and inform them of what your Lord has commanded you.' He said: 'Yes.' So he gathered them and they said: 'What has He commanded you?' He said: 'He commanded me that you worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, that you maintain ties of kinship, and such and such. He commanded me regarding the adulterer, if he commits adultery and has been married, that he be stoned.' They said: 'Even if it were you?' He said: 'Yes.' 'And regarding the thief, if he steals, that his hand be cut off.' They said: 'Even if it were you?'
He said: 'Yes.' They said: 'Then you have committed adultery.' He said: 'Indeed. So send for the woman.' She came, and they said: 'What do you testify regarding Musa?' Musa said to her: 'I adjure you by Allah, tell the truth.' She said: 'Since you have adjured me by Allah, they invited me and promised me a payment to accuse you of [committing adultery] with me, and I testify that you are innocent and that you are the Messenger of Allah.' He said: So Musa fell down in prostration, weeping. Allah revealed to him: 'What makes you weep? We have given you power over the earth, so command it and it will obey you.' He said: So he raised his head and said: 'Take them.' It took them. He gestured to his waist [level]. They cried: 'O Musa!' He said: 'Take them.' He gestured to his chest. They cried: 'O Musa!' He said: 'Take them.' He said: So they sank into it. Allah said: 'And We caused the earth to swallow him and his home,' to the end of the verse. Calamity and severe hunger afflicted the Children of Israel, so they came to Musa and said: 'Pray for us.' He prayed to Allah, and Allah said: 'Do you pray to Me for a people between whom and Me there is such darkness of sins?' He said: 'They called upon You when they were perishing, and had they called upon Me, I would have answered them.'
