Volume 9 · Page 22[Surah ash-Shu'ara (26): Verse 187]

Translation · EN

Ya'qub ibn Abi Salamah mentioned to me—when he mentioned him, meaning Shu'ayb—that he said: That is the orator of the prophets due to the excellence of his rebuttals to his people regarding that with which he disputed them. When they rejected him, threatened him with stoning and exile from his land, and were arrogant toward Allah, the punishment of the day of the shadow took them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a great day. It reached me that a man from the people of Madyan, called 'Amr ibn Jalha', said when he saw it:

O my people, Shu'ayb is a messenger, so leave Aside from you Samir and 'Imran ibn Shaddad

I see a cloud, O my people, that has risen Calling with a voice upon the valley's crag

And if you are gathered within it at the forenoon of tomorrow There is nothing in it but the Raqim walking between the heights

Samir and 'Imran were their soothsayer, and the Raqim was their dog.

His saying (the Almighty): "So cause to fall upon us fragments of the heaven, if you should be of the truthful."

The Second View: 15924 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, [saying]: al-Husayn ibn 'Ali narrated to us, [saying]: 'Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, [saying]: Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "Fragments of the heaven," [he] says: A punishment from the sky.

His saying (the Almighty): "[Shu'ayb] said, 'My Lord is most knowing of what you do.'" 15925 - Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la informed us, by way of reading, [saying]: Ibn Wahb informed us, [who] said: I heard Malik saying: Shu'ayb was the orator of the prophets.

His saying (the Almighty): "But they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the shadow seized them." 15926 - 'Imran ibn Bakkar ibn Burad al-Homsi narrated to us, [saying]: al-Rabi' ibn Rawh narrated to us, [saying]: Muhammad ibn Harb narrated to us, [saying]: al-Zubaydi narrated to us, from Dawud, from Yazid ibn Damrah al-Bahili, [who] said: I heard Ibn 'Abbas mentioning the punishment of the day of the shadow. [He] said: Allah (the Almighty and Majestic) sent upon them a stagnant heat, which seized their breath until it roasted them in their houses. So they went out seeking coolness, and when they left their village, Allah sent...
