The third interpretation:

17179 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Yaman narrated to us, from Sufyan, from a man, from al-Hasan regarding "do not desire exaltedness upon the earth," he said: High status and honor, in the presence of those who hold their authority.

17180 - My father narrated to us, ‘Amr ibn Aslam al-Tarasusi narrated to us, he said: I heard Mu‘awiyah al-Aswad regarding the saying of Allah: "That Home of the Hereafter, We assign it to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth nor corruption," he said: They did not dispute with its people for its honor by way of tyranny and arrogance, and they did not despair of its humility.

17181 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Musa narrated to us, al-Qasim ibn Malik narrated to us, Ash‘ath ibn Yazid al-Shami narrated to me, he said: I heard Abu Salam al-A‘raj al-Habashi say: I heard ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib say: A man might love for the lace of his sandal to be better than the lace of his companion, so he enters into this verse: "That Home of the Hereafter, We assign it to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth nor corruption, and the [best] outcome is for the righteous."

17182 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Hammad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn al-Mukhtar narrated to us, from ‘Anbasah ibn al-Azhar, from Nusayr Abu al-Aswad, from al-Dahhak regarding "do not desire exaltedness upon the earth," he says: Oppression.

17183 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Yaman narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mansur, from Muslim al-Batin, he said: Transgression upon the earth without right.

17184 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mansur, from Muslim al-Batin regarding "nor corruption," he said: Corruption is taking [something] without right.

17185 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah al-Bazzar narrated to us, Isma‘il ibn Zakariyya narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Awn al-Khurasani, from ‘Ikrimah regarding "nor corruption," [meaning:] they do not work acts of disobedience to Allah.

His saying, the Exalted: "And the [best] outcome"

17186 - By way of it, from ‘Ikrimah regarding "And the [best] outcome is for the righteous," he said: The outcome: is Paradise—and it was narrated from Qatadah the like of that.

17187 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas, the freed slave of the Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Junayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said regarding "for the righteous," i.e., for whoever obeys Me and obeys My Messenger. Its explanation has already preceded.
