and al-Nakha‘i, Abu Salih, al-Zuhri, Zayd ibn Aslam, Muhammad ibn Ka‘b, al-Suddi, Qatadah, and al-Dahhak [narrated] the like of that.

The second interpretation:

17195 - It was mentioned from Muhammad ibn ‘Utbah al-Kindi, with his aforementioned chain of narration, he said: I entered upon ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib and he said: O Abu ‘Abd Allah, shall I not tell you about the evil deed that whoever brings it, Allah will cast him upon his face into the Fire, and no deed will be accepted from him along with it? I said: Yes, O Commander of the Faithful. He said: The evil deed is our hatred.

His saying, the Exalted: "And those who did evil deeds are not recompensed except with what they used to do."

17196 - ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali ibn Mihran narrated to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi, regarding "And whoever brings an evil deed, and those who did evil deeds are not recompensed except with what they used to do," he said: Whoever brings an evil deed, its recompense is an evil deed like it from among all the sins. That is at the time of the reckoning; when he is brought to account, for every good deed [ten] evil deeds are cast [in its place]. If one good deed remains, it is multiplied for him, and he is entered into Paradise by it. But if his evil deeds, at the time of offsetting when ten were cast [to offset] a good deed, were more than his good deeds, and one evil deed remained, his recompense would be the Fire, unless Allah pardons him.

His saying, the Exalted: "Indeed, [He] who ordained the Qur'an for you..."

17197 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Indeed, [He] who ordained the Qur'an for you," [meaning:] He gave it to you.

17198 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, al-Maqdisi narrated to us, a man whom he named narrated to us, al-Suddi narrated to us, from Abu Salih, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding "Indeed, [He] who ordained the Qur'an for you will return you to a place of return." Ibn ‘Abbas said: [It means] He will return you to Paradise, then He will ask you about the Qur'an. And al-Suddi said: Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri said the same.

His saying, the Exalted: "...to a place of return."

[The first interpretation]

17199 - Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding "to a place of return," he said: [It is] death. — And it was narrated from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, ‘Ikrimah, and Mujahid the like of that.
