[Surah al-‘Ankabut]

29

[His saying, the Exalted: Alif-Lam-Mim]

[The First Aspect]

17119 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Waki‘ narrated to us, from Sharik, from ‘Ata’ ibn al-Sa’ib, from Abu al-Duha, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding "Alif-Lam-Mim," he said: I am Allah, the All-Knowing. It was narrated from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr and al-Dahhak similarly.

[The Second Aspect]

17120 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Yahya ibn ‘Abbad narrated to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us, from al-Suddi, who said: It reached me from Ibn ‘Abbas that he said: Alif-Lam-Mim is one of the names of Allah, the Greatest.

17121 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, ‘Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat ibn Nasr narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding Alif-Lam-Mim: It is a letter from the letters of the name of Allah.

17122 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi Rizmah narrated to us, my father narrated to us, ‘Isa ibn ‘Ubayd narrated to us, from Husayn ibn ‘Uthman al-Mizzi, from Salim ibn ‘Abd Allah, who said: Alif-Lam-Mim, Ha-Mim, Nun, and their likes are broken-down letters of the name of Allah.

17123 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ma‘mar narrated to us, ‘Ayyash ibn Ziyad narrated to us, Ya‘la reported to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us, from Abu Bishr, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "Alif-Lam-Mim, Ha-Mim, Nun," he said: It is a broken-down name.

[The Third Aspect]:

17124 - ‘Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam ibn Abi Iyas narrated to us, Abu Ja‘far al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Rabi‘ ibn Anas, from Abu al-‘Aliyah regarding his saying: "Alif-Lam-Mim," he said: These three letters are from the twenty-nine letters which all tongues have articulated. There is not a letter among them except that it is a key to one of His names, and there is no letter among them except that it is in the verse and [he mentioned a word unclear in the original], and there is no letter among them except that it is in the duration of nations and their appointed terms. ‘Isa ibn Maryam, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, marveled and said: It is astonishing that they speak with His names and live on His provision, so how can they disbelieve in Him? The Alif is the key to His name Allah, the Lam is the key to His name Latif (the Subtle), and the Mim is the key to His name Majid (the Glorious). So the Alif is for Allah, the Lam is for the Gentleness (Lutf) of Allah, and the Mim is for the Glory (Majd) of Allah. The Alif is six, the Lam is thirty, and the Mim is forty.

It was narrated from al-Rabi‘ ibn Anas similarly.
