...traditions (sunan) have come to us.” They were harmed for the sake of Allah and they remained patient during poverty and hardship, and they were grateful during times of prosperity. Allah decreed for them that He would test them with prosperity, hardship, good, evil, fear, tranquility, and travel. And Allah revealed their reports during that time from the past, until the war laid down its burdens and they sat in gatherings in safety. Then the Prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said at the end of his life, fearing for them regarding the worldly life and knowing that they would be tested by it, that its treasures would be opened for them. He cautioned them against that, lest the worldly life deceive them, and he informed them that trials would certainly occur and that it would specifically afflict those among them who did wrong. So when they did that, they were in a state of depletion and change.
17131 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid al-Narsi reported to us, Yazid ibn Zuray‘ narrated to us, Sa‘id narrated to us, Matar al-Warraq narrated to me, from al-Sha‘bi regarding His saying: “Alif-Lam-Mim. Do the people think that they will be left [merely] because they say 'We believe' and they will not be tested?” He said: It was revealed concerning people who were in Makkah and had acknowledged Islam, until they migrated. He said: So they went out, intending to go to Madinah, but the polytheists followed them and turned them back, so this verse was revealed. He said: So they wrote to them that a verse such-and-such had been revealed concerning them. He said: So they said: We will go out, and if anyone follows us, we will fight them. He said: So they went out and the polytheists followed them and fought them; some of them were killed and some of them were saved. So Allah revealed concerning them: “Then indeed, your Lord, to those who emigrated after they were persecuted and then fought and were patient—indeed, your Lord, after that, is Forgiving, Merciful.”
17132 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Safwan narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir reported to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: “Alif-Lam-Mim. Do the people think that they will be left [merely] because they say 'We believe' and they will not be tested?” He said: It was revealed concerning people from the people of Makkah who went out intending to reach the Prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, but the polytheists intercepted them and they returned. Then their brothers wrote to them about what had been revealed concerning them from the Qur'an. So they went out; those who were killed were killed and those who were saved were saved. Then the Qur'an was revealed: “And those who strive for Us—We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.”
His saying, the Exalted: "Because they say 'We believe'"
