His saying, the Exalted: "We will surely admit them among the righteous."
17169 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj reported, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding "among the righteous": He said: With the righteous, with the prophets and the believers.
His saying, the Exalted: "And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah,' but when they are harmed for the sake of Allah..."
17170 - Ahmad ibn Mansur and Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Sharik reported to us, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: There were a group of people from the people of Makkah who had embraced Islam, and they were keeping their Islam hidden. The polytheists took them out with them on the day of Badr, and some were struck and some were killed. The Muslims said: "These companions of ours were Muslims and were forced [into the battle], so seek forgiveness for them." Then it was revealed: "Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while they are wronging themselves..." They said: "In what [condition] were you?"... until the end of the verse. He said: So those who remained of the Muslims wrote to them about this verse, [stating] that they had no excuse. So they went out, and the polytheists caught up with them and forced them into the trial (fitnah). Then this verse was revealed concerning them: "And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah,' but when they are harmed for the sake of Allah, they make the trial of the people as the punishment of Allah..." until the end of the verse. So the Muslims wrote to them concerning that, and they went out and despaired of all goodness.
17171 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shabanah reported to us, Warqa’ reported to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "But when they are harmed for the sake of Allah," to His saying: "And He will surely know the hypocrites"—they are people who believe with their tongues, but when a trial from the people befalls them, or an affliction in their souls or their wealth, they are tempted (iftutanu), and they equate that in the world with the punishment of Allah in the Hereafter.
17172 - ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali reported to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah,' but when they are harmed for the sake of Allah, they make the trial of the people as the punishment of Allah": He said: There were people among the believers who had believed and emigrated, but Abu Sufyan caught up with them and returned some of them to Makkah, where he tortured them and they were tempted (uftutinu), so this [verse] was revealed about them.
His saying, the Exalted: "But when they are harmed for the sake of Allah."
