17174 - And by the same chain, regarding His saying: "they make the trial of the people as the punishment of Allah," it is said: When an affliction befalls him for the sake of Allah, he equates the punishment of the people with the punishment of Allah.

17175 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘d ibn ‘Atiyyah informed me in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my paternal uncle narrated to me, my father narrated to me, from his father ‘Atiyyah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding His saying: "but when they are harmed for the sake of Allah, they make the trial of the people as the punishment of Allah," he said: The trial... [leads one to] recant from the religion of Allah when he is harmed for the sake of Allah.

17176 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed me in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj reported to us, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd regarding the saying of Allah: "but when they are harmed for the sake of Allah, they make the trial of the people as the punishment of Allah," he said: This is the hypocrite: when he is harmed for the sake of Allah, he recants from the religion and disbelieves, and he makes the trial of the people like the punishment of Allah.

His saying, the Exalted: "like the punishment of Allah."

17177 - al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid al-Bayruti informed me by reading, Muhammad ibn Shu‘ayb ibn Shabur informed me, ‘Uthman ibn ‘Ata’ informed me, from his father ‘Ata’, regarding "they make the trial of the people as the punishment of Allah," he said: When an affliction befalls him for the sake of Allah, he equates the punishment of Allah with the punishment of the people, whereas the punishment of Allah does not cease or pass away, while the punishment of the people ceases.

17178 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi ‘Umar reported to us, Sufyan reported to us, he said: It reached me from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, he said: The punishment of the people of denial is through the blast and the earthquake, and the punishment of the people of monotheism is by the sword.

His saying, the Exalted: "And He will surely know the believers and He will surely know the hypocrites."

17179 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shabanah reported to us, Warqa’ reported to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And He will surely know the believers and He will surely know the hypocrites": They are people who believed with their tongues, but when a trial from the people befalls them, or an affliction in their souls or their wealth, they are tempted (futinu).

His saying, the Exalted: "And those who disbelieved said."

17180 - By the same chain, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "And those who disbelieved said," he said: The disbelievers of Quraysh.
