abandoned them a long time ago." He said: "Then, when Allah intended to punish them, He sent upon them intense heat." He said: "Neither a house, nor shade, nor anything benefited them." He said: "They set out seeking relief and coolness." He said: "One of them entered the shadow (the cloud) and found it cool, so he called out to the people: 'Coolness! Coolness!' When they had all gathered beneath it, Allah cast it down upon them. That is the meaning of His saying: 'But they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the shadow seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a great day.'
15937 - Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tehrani informed us in what he wrote to me, [saying]: 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, [saying]: Ma'mar informed us, [saying]: A man from among our companions narrated to me, from some of the scholars, [who] said: They had suspended a penalty, so Allah expanded their provision. Then they suspended another penalty, so Allah expanded their provision. They continued such that every time they suspended a penalty, Allah expanded their provision until, when Allah willed their destruction, He imposed upon them heat they could not escape from, and neither shade nor water benefited them. Then a man among them went forth and sought shelter under a shadow (cloud) and found relief in it. He called to his companions: 'Come to the relief!' They went to him quickly, and when they gathered within it and were all present, He ignited it with fire upon them. That is the meaning of His saying: 'The punishment of the day of the shadow. Indeed, it was the punishment of a great day.'
15940 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, [saying]: Asbagh ibn al-Faraj informed us, [who] said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd regarding the saying of Allah: 'But they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the shadow seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a great day,' [who] said: Allah sent the shadow upon them and heated the sun over them, so they burned as locusts burn in a frying pan.
His saying (the Exalted): 'And indeed, it is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.'
15941 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tehrani informed us in what he wrote to me, [saying]: 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, [saying]: Ma'mar informed us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: 'And indeed, it is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds,' [who] said: The Qur'an.
His saying (the Exalted): 'The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down.'
15942 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, [saying]: Hafs al-Mukattib narrated to us, from Idris, from 'Atiyyah regarding: 'The Trustworthy Spirit,' [who] said: Gabriel.
And it was narrated from Muhammad ibn Ka'b, Qatadah, al-Suddi, al-Dahhak, and al-Zuhri something similar to that.
15943 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, [saying]: Ahmad ibn al-Sabah narrated to us, [saying]: al-Khaffaf (meaning 'Abd al-Wahhab) narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn 'Ubayd and Isma'il, from al-Hasan: 'The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down with its weight,' [who] said: Allah caused Gabriel (peace be upon him) to descend.
