to him, and they raised him to the top of the structure. Abraham raised his head to the heaven, and the heaven, the earth, the mountains, and the angels said: "Our Lord, Abraham is burning for Your sake!" He said: "I know better than you about him; if he calls upon you, then aid him." And Abraham said when he raised his head to the heaven: "O Allah, You are the One, the Unique in the heaven, and I am the unique one on the earth; there is no one who worships You other than me: Sufficient for me is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs." Then they threw him into the fire.
His saying, the Exalted: "So Allah saved him from the fire."
17236 - From al-Suddi, he said: He raised his head to the heaven and said: "Sufficient for me is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs." Then they threw him into the fire.
Then He called to it and said: "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham," and it was Gabriel, peace be upon him, who called to it.
Ibn ‘Abbas said: Had He not followed its coolness with safety, Abraham would have died from its cold. And there did not remain that day on earth a fire except that it was extinguished, as it thought that it was the one being addressed. When the fire was extinguished, they looked at Abraham, and behold, there was another man with him, and Abraham's head was in his lap, wiping the sweat from his face. It was mentioned that that man was the Angel of Shade. Allah then sent down fire [to burn], from which the children of Adam benefited. They took Abraham out and brought him to the King, and he had not entered upon him before that; so he spoke to him.
17237 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid reported to us, Yazid ibn Zuray‘ reported to us, he said: I heard Sa‘id, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "So Allah saved him from the fire," Ka‘b said: The fire did not burn anything of him except his bonds.
His saying, the Exalted: "[a] bond between you in the worldly life."
17238 - From Qatadah, with the same chain of narration, regarding His saying: "And [Abraham] said, 'You have only taken, other than Allah, idols [as] a bond between you in the worldly life,'" he said: Every affection in the world will become enmity for its people on the Day of Resurrection.
17239 - Musa ibn Harun al-Tusi informed us, in what he wrote to me, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali al-Marwudhi reported to us, Shayban ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman reported to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "You have only taken, other than Allah, idols [as] a bond between you in the worldly life," he said: You have only taken them for their reward in the world.
(1). In the original [it is written]: "ittakhadhtumuha" (you took them). (2). Mentioned in the marginalia as: "lin-nadhr" (for the vow).
