His saying, the Exalted: "And when Our messengers came to Lot."
17285 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salamah Musa ibn Isma‘il reported to us, Hammad reported to us, from ‘Ata ibn al-Sa’ib, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Bishr al-Ansari, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The people had warned the people of Lot, then the angels came to them in the evening and passed by their meeting place. The people of Lot said to one another, 'Do not drive them away,' and they had never seen people more handsome than the angels. When they entered upon Lot, the people of Lot turned towards the vile ones. Lot went out to them and they solicited him for his guests. He continued to persist with them until he offered his daughters to them. They then came and entered his house. The angels said: 'We are messengers of your Lord; they will not reach us.' He said: 'Messengers of my Lord?' They said: 'Yes.' Lot said: 'Then now, it is time.'"
17286 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, ‘Amr ibn Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi, who said: The angels left from Abraham towards the town of Lot and arrived at midday. When they arrived, they met a daughter of Lot fetching water for her family. He had two daughters; the name of the eldest was Rabtha and the youngest was Zaghartha. He said to her: "O young girl, is there any water?" She said: "Yes, stay where you are; do not enter until I come to you." She felt compassion for them because of her people. She came to her father and said: "O my father, young men called to me at the gate of the city whose faces I have never seen anyone more handsome than. Do not let your people take them and disgrace them." His people had forbidden him to host any man, and they said: "Leave us alone, we will host the men." So she brought them, and no one knew about them except the household of Lot—men, I have never seen their likes. He said: So his people came to him, rushing towards him... They said: "Did we not forbid you from hosting [all] people?"
His saying, the Exalted: "...was distressed for them."
17287 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to me, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "was distressed for them," he says: He had a bad opinion concerning his people.
17288 - My father narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn ‘Umar ibn Shaqiq al-Juhani reported to us, Husayn reported to us, Sulayman reported to us, from Abu ‘Imran al-Jawni, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Rabah, from Ka‘b: "was distressed for them and felt helpless for them." He was troubled by their presence due to the beauty he saw in them, and "felt helpless for them" means he felt distressed for his guests.
