Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 9 · Page 276His saying (the Almighty): '...you do'

Translation · EN

the angels cover them with their wings as long as they are in it, until they engage in speech other than it. Whoever traverses a path seeking knowledge, Allah will facilitate for him a path to Paradise; and whoever is held back by his deeds, his lineage will not hasten him.

17352 - My father narrated to us, al-Nufayli narrated to us, Isma'il narrated to us, from Khalid, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And the remembrance of Allah is greater," he said: "It has two aspects." He said: "The remembrance of Allah when He prohibits something." He said: "Allah's remembrance of you is greater than your remembrance of Him."

17353 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And the remembrance of Allah for His servant is greater than the servant's remembrance of his Lord in prayer and other than it."

[His saying, the Almighty: "You are doing"]

It is the same as "you are working" (ta'malun); its interpretation has already been provided.

His saying, the Almighty: "And do not argue"

[The first aspect]

17354 - My father narrated to us, Malik ibn Isma'il narrated to us, Qays ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, from Khusayf, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best," he said: "There were people from the Ansar who were seeking wet-nurses for their children among the Jews, and they used to argue with them and mention Islam to them, so Allah revealed: 'There is no compulsion in religion.'"

The second aspect

17355 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tahrani reported to me in what he wrote to me, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And do not argue with the People of the Scripture"—he said: "It was abrogated by 'Kill the polytheists wherever you find them,' for there is no argument more severe than the sword."

The third aspect

17356 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi reported to me in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj narrated to us, who said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the saying of Allah: "And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best," he said: "It is not abrogated; it is not appropriate to argue with those of them who have believed, perhaps they might introduce something into the Book of Allah that you do not know." He said: "'Do not argue'—it is not appropriate for you to argue with them."
