I heard Sa'id, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "And none rejects Our verses except the disbelievers," he said: "Rejection only occurs after knowledge."

His saying, the Almighty: "And you did not recite before it any scripture"

17370 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Usamah narrated to us, from Idris, from al-Hakam, from Mujahid, regarding "And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand," he said: "The People of the Scripture used to find in their books that Muhammad does not inscribe with his right hand nor read a scripture, so this verse was revealed."

17371 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid narrated to us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, who said: I heard Sa'id, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand," he said: "The Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did not read a scripture before it, nor did he inscribe one with his right hand." He said: "And he was unlettered (ummi), and the unlettered is the one who does not write."

[His saying, the Almighty: "Nor did you inscribe one with your right hand"]

The second version

17373 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Ibn Abi Hammad narrated to us, Mihran narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, who said: "The unlettered is one who reads but does not write."

His saying, the Almighty: "Otherwise the falsifiers would have had doubt"

17374 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Otherwise the falsifiers would have had doubt," he said: "Quraysh."

His saying, the Almighty: "Rather, it is distinct verses in the breasts of those who have been given knowledge"

17375 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tahrani informed us, in what he wrote to me, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Rather, it is distinct verses," he said: "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is a distinct sign (ayah)." And thus Qatadah recited. Ma'mar said: al-Hasan said: "The Qur'an is distinct verses."
