Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 9 · Page 305Surah Luqman (31): Verse 11

Translation · EN

Those who were concerned with sins, but when they remembered My greatness, they were watchful of Me; and those whose loins bent in fear of Me. (1)

[His saying, the Exalted: "This is the creation of Allah..." the verse]

17528 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "This is the creation of Allah," meaning what was mentioned of the creation of the heavens and the earth, and what He dispersed in them of living creatures, and what He caused to grow of every kind. "Then show Me what those other than Him have created," meaning the idols. (2)

His saying, the Exalted: "And indeed We gave Luqman"

17529 - From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) who said: I said to Jabir ibn Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with them both): What has reached you regarding the affair of Luqman (peace be upon him)? He said: He was a short man, with a flat nose, from Nubia. (3)

17530 - From Said ibn al-Musayyab (may Allah be pleased with him) that Luqman (peace be upon him) was black from the blacks of Egypt, with thick lips. Allah granted him wisdom and withheld prophethood from him. (4)

17531 - From Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: Luqman (peace be upon him) was an Ethiopian slave, with thick lips, wide-footed, acting as a judge for the Children of Israel. (5)

17532 - From Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "And indeed We gave Luqman wisdom," he said: Understanding, jurisprudence, and accuracy in speech, without being a prophet. (6)

17533 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: Allah, the Exalted, gave Luqman the choice between wisdom and prophethood. He chose wisdom over prophethood. Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to him while he was sleeping and scattered wisdom upon him, and he awoke speaking it. It was said to him: How did you choose wisdom over prophethood when your Lord gave you the choice? He said: Had He sent me prophethood as a command, I would have hoped for success from Him, and I would have hoped to uphold it. But He gave me the choice, and I feared that I would be weak for prophethood, so wisdom was more beloved to me. (7)

17534 - From Wahb ibn Munabbih (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked: Was Luqman (peace be upon him) a prophet? He said: No. It was not revealed to him; he was a righteous man. (8)
