Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 9 · Page 309Surah Luqman (31): Verses 28 to 32

Translation · EN

Do you mean us or your people?" He replied: "It is little in the knowledge of Allah." Then Allah revealed regarding that: "And if whatever tree upon the earth were pens" (1).

17560 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The polytheists said: "This is nothing but speech that will soon..." Then was revealed: "And if whatever tree upon the earth were pens," he says: If the trees of the earth were pens, and the sea were ink, with seven seas added to it, the pens would break and the water of the seas would run out before the wonders of my Lord, His wisdom, and His knowledge could be exhausted (2).

17561 - From Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Your creation and your resurrection will not be but as that of a single soul," he said: He says to it: "Be," and it is. The little and the much (3).

17562 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Your creation and your resurrection will not be but as that of a single soul," he says: Allah created all of mankind and resurrects them just as He creates and resurrects a single soul. And regarding His saying: "Do you not see that Allah causes the night to enter the day," he said: The decrease of the night is the increase of the day, and He causes the day to enter the night, the decrease of the day is an increase in the night. "Each runs to a specified term," for all of that there is one known time which it does not exceed nor fall short of. And regarding His saying: "Indeed in that are signs for every patient, grateful one," he said: Indeed, the most beloved of the servants of Allah to Him is the patient, grateful one, who when he is given, he is grateful, and when he is tested, he is patient. And regarding His saying: "And when a wave covers them like canopies," he said: Like the clouds. And regarding His saying: "And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous, ungrateful," he said: Treacherous regarding his covenant, ungrateful to his Lord (4).

17563 - From Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "Then among them is he who is moderate," he said: In speech, and he is a disbeliever. "And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous," he said: Treacherous, "ungrateful," he said: Disbeliever (5).

17564 - From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding His saying: "And let not the Deceiver deceive you about Allah," he said: The Shaytan (5).

17565 - From Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: A man from the Bedouin came and said: "My wife is pregnant, so tell me what she will bear? Our lands are in a drought, so tell me when the rain will descend? I already know when I was born, so tell me when I will die?" Then Allah revealed: "Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour..." (6).
