And regarding those who transgressed, he said: They are those who associated partners with Allah. And regarding His saying: "You used to deny," he said: They deny as you see (1).

[His saying, the Almighty: "And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment"]

17853 - From Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment," he said: The day of Badr, "short of the greater punishment," he said: The Day of Resurrection. "That perhaps they might return," he said: That those who remain of them might return (2).

17854 - From Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment," he said: The calamities, sicknesses, and tribulations of the world, with which Allah tests the servants so that they might repent (3).

17855 - From Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment," he said: The prescribed punishments (hudud). "That perhaps they might return," he said: That they might repent (4).

[His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, We, from the criminals, will take retribution"]

17857 - From Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) saying: "Three things, whoever does them has committed a crime: Whoever sets up a standard (liwa') without a right, or is undutiful to his parents, or walks with a tyrant to support him, has committed a crime. Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, says: 'Indeed, We, from the criminals, will take retribution'" (6).

His saying, the Almighty: "So do not be in doubt over his meeting."

17858 - From Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "So do not be in doubt over his meeting," he said: Over the meeting with Moses. It was said: "Or did he meet Moses?" He said: "Yes. Do you not see His saying: 'And ask those We sent before you from among Our messengers'" (7).

17859 - From Mujahid regarding "So do not be in doubt over his meeting," he said: Over that you should meet Moses (8).
