- Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us: Asbagh ibn al-Faraj informed us, saying: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding Allah's saying: "In every valley they wander aimlessly, and that they say what they do not do." My father said: "This pertains only to the poets of the polytheists, not the poets of the believers. Do you not see that Allah says: 'Except for those who believe, do righteous deeds, and remember Allah much?'" He said: "You have relieved me, O Abu Usamah, may Allah relieve you."
His saying the Almighty: "Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds"
- Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us: Abu Usamah narrated to us, from al-Walid ibn Kathir, from Yazid ibn 'Abd Allah, from Abu al-Hasan, the freed slave of Banu Nawfal, that Hassan ibn Thabit and 'Abd Allah ibn Rawahah came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) weeping when: "And the poets, the straying ones follow them" was revealed. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said while reciting it to them: "And the poets, the straying ones follow them," until he reached: "Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds." He said: "It is you."
- My father narrated to us: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Yahya ibn Wadih narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yazid ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Qusayt, from Abu al-Hasan al-Barrad, who said: When this verse was revealed, 'Abd Allah ibn Rawahah, Ka'b ibn Malik, and Hassan ibn Thabit came weeping. He mentioned the like of it.
- My father narrated to us: Abu Salamah narrated to us: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Hisham ibn 'Urwah, from 'Urwah, who said: When "And the poets, the straying ones follow them" was revealed up to His saying: "...they say what they do not do," 'Abd Allah ibn Rawahah said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah already knows that I am among them." So Allah revealed: "Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds..." until His saying: "...will turn back."
- Abu Zur'ah narrated to us: Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us: Bishr ibn 'Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying... He said: Then He made an exception and said: "Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds." He means: Hassan, 'Abd Allah ibn Rawahah, and Ka'b ibn Malik; they used to defend the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his companions by lampooning the polytheists.
- Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tahrani informed me in what he wrote to me: 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us: Ma'mar narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds," he said: They are the Ansar who defended the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
