humans, then he would give permission to the demons, and they would be behind the jinn. Then he would send for the wind, and it would come to him, carrying them, while the birds shaded him from above. He would travel on his couch and chairs, and they would travel with him the distance of a rider's morning journey until he desired to stop for a month, and then it would return with them for a similar duration.
16192 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freedman of the Banu Hashim, narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from some of the people of knowledge, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said: Solomon inherited the kingdom, and Allah brought to him prophecy. He asked Him to grant him a kingdom that would not be proper for anyone after him, and He did so—Blessed and Exalted is He—so He subjected to him the humans, the jinn, the birds, and the wind. Whenever he went out from his house to his assembly—and they claim he was white-skinned, handsome, radiant, and had abundant hair; he would wear white garments—the birds would gather over him, and the humans and jinn would stand until he sat upon his couch. He was a man who engaged in frequent expeditions, rarely refraining from fighting, and he would not hear of a king in any region of the earth but that he would come to him until he humbled him. They claim that whenever he intended to engage in an expedition, he would command his army to construct it from wood, then it would be set upon the wood, then he would load onto it the people, the beasts, and all the equipment of war. When he had loaded everything he desired with him, he would command the violent wind, and it would enter beneath that wood and carry it. When it became heavy with it, it was commanded to be gentle, and it would throw it for a month in his evening journey, and a month in his morning journey, to wherever Allah willed.
Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says: "So We subjected to him the wind, blowing by his command, gently, wherever he directed"—meaning wherever he willed. He said: "And for Solomon [We subjected] the wind—its morning [journey was] a month, and its evening [journey was] a month." He said: It was mentioned that there is a dwelling place in the region of the Tigris where it is written an inscription written by some of the companions of Solomon (peace be upon him), either from the jinn or from the humans: "We arrived at it and did not build it; we found it built. We departed from Istakhr, and we returned to it. We are departing from it, if Allah wills, and will spend the night in the Levant." It reached me that the gentle wind would pass by his army, carrying it to wherever he willed, and it would pass by a stalk of grain and not move it. That was the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).
His saying (Exalted is He): "And they will be gathered (in ranks)"
