His saying, the Almighty: "Or is he among the absent?"
16223 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Isa narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: When Solomon—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—would go out to his seat where he used to sit, he would inspect the birds. It was claimed that they would come to him in turns, with a bird from every species coming each day. He looked and saw that all the species of birds were present except for the hoopoe. He said: "Why do I not see the hoopoe? Or is he among the absent?"—did my sight miss him among the birds, or has he been absent and not arrived?
His saying: "I will surely punish him with a severe punishment"
16224 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, al-A'mash narrated to us, from al-Minhal ibn 'Amr, from Sa'id, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "I will surely punish him with a severe punishment," he said: He would pluck his feathers.
16225 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Hisinjani narrated to us, Musaddad narrated to us, Yahya narrated to us, from Rabi'ah ibn Kulthum, from his father, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "I will surely punish him with a severe punishment," he said: His punishment is the plucking of his feathers, and he will not be spared from anything.
16226 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Husayn, from 'Abdullah ibn Shaddad, regarding His saying: "I will surely punish him with a severe punishment," he said: His punishment is the plucking of his feathers and leaving him in the sun.
16227 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "I will surely punish him with a severe punishment," we used to be told that his punishment was the plucking of his feathers, and he would leave him in the place until the ants and the termites ate him.
16228 - It was mentioned from Bishr ibn Mu'adh, Khalaf ibn Khalifah narrated to us, from Abu al-Asmar, regarding "I will surely punish him with a severe punishment," he said: He would pluck his feathers and strike him with a whip.
16229 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Isa narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, from Yazid ibn Rumman, that he related that the punishment with which he used to punish the birds was the plucking of the feathers of its wing.
16230 - My father narrated to us, 'Asim ibn Salim al-Razi narrated to us, al-Jafri—meaning al-Hasan ibn Abi Ja'far—narrated to us, Layth narrated to us, from Mujahid, regarding "I will surely punish him with a severe punishment or I will surely slaughter him, or he must bring me a clear authority," he said: Allah only defended him—meaning the hoopoe—due to his kindness to his mother.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: أَمْ كَانَ مِنَ الْغَائِبِينَ
١٦٢٢٣ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، ثنا سَلَمَةُ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: فَكَانَ سُلَيْمَانُ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- إِذَا غَدَا لِمَجْلِسِهِ الَّذِي كان يجلس فيه ف تفقد الطَّيْرَ، وَكَانَتْ فِيمَا يَزْعُمُونَ تَأْتِيَهِ نُوَبًا مِنْ كُلِّ صِنْفٍ مِنَ الطَّيْرِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ طَائِرٌ، فَنَظَرَ فَرَأَى مِنْ أَصْنَافِ الطَّيْرِ كُلِّهَا مَنْ حَضَرَهُ إِلا الْهُدْهُدَ فَقَالَ مَا لِي لَا أَرَى الْهُدْهُدَ أَمْ كَانَ مِنَ الْغَائِبِينَ أَخْطَأَهُ بَصَرِي فِي الطَّيْرِ، أَمْ غَابَ فَلَمْ يَحْضُرْ.
قَوْلُهُ: لأُعَذِّبَنَّهُ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا
١٦٢٢٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، ثنا وَكِيعٌ، ثنا الأَعْمَشُ، عَنِ الْمِنْهَالِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ سَعِيدِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: لأَعُذِّبَنَّهُ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا قَالَ: نَتَفَ رِيشَهُ.
١٦٢٢٥ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْهِسِنْجَانِيُّ، ثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، ثنا يَحْيَى، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ كُلْثُومٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ لأُعَذِّبَنَّهُ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا قَالَ:
عَذَابُهُ نَتْفُ رِيشِهِ، وَلا يَمْتَنِعُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ.
١٦٢٢٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، ثنا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَدَّادٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: لأُعَذِّبَنَّهُ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا قَالَ عَذَابُهُ نَتْفُ رِيشِهِ وَتَشْمِيسُهُ.
١٦٢٢٧ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَنْبَأَ الْعَبَّاسُ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَوْلُهُ: لأُعَذِّبَنَّهُ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا كُنَّا نُحَدِّثُ أَنَّ عَذَابَهُ ذَلِكَ نَتْفُ رِيشِهِ فَيَذَرُهُ فِي الْمَنْزِلِ حَتَّى تَأْكُلَهُ الذَّرُّ وَالنَّمْلُ.
١٦٢٢٨ - ذُكِرَ، عَنْ بِشْرِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ، ثنا خَلَفُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الأَسْمَرِ لأُعَذِّبَنَّهُ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا قَالَ أَنْ يَنْتِفَ رِيشَهُ وَيَضْرِبَهُ بِسَوْطٍ.
١٦٢٢٩ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، ثنا سَلَمَةُ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ رُومَانَ، أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَ أَنَّ عَذَابَهُ الَّذِي كَانَ يُعَذِّبُ بِهِ الطَّيْرَ نَتْفُ رِيشِ جَنَاحِهِ.
١٦٢٣٠ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا عَاصِمُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ الرَّازِيُّ، ثنا الْجَفْرِيُّ يَعْنِي الْحَسَنَ بْنَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا لَيْثٌ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ لَأُعَذِّبَنَّهُ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا أَوْ لَأَذْبَحَنَّهُ أَوْ لَيَأْتِيَنِّي بِسُلْطَانٍ مُبِينٍ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا دَفَعَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، يَعْنِي الْهُدْهُدَ بِبُرِّهِ وَالِدَتَهُ.
