His saying, the Almighty: "Or I will surely slaughter him"

16231 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Munib narrated to us, Abu Mu'adh al-Nahwi narrated to us, 'Ubayd ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "I will surely punish him with a severe punishment," he said: I will pluck his feathers. "Or I will surely slaughter him," he said: I will kill him.

His saying, the Almighty: "Or he must bring me a clear authority"

16232 - 'Ubaydullah ibn Isma'il narrated to us, al-Muqri narrated to us, Qabath ibn Razin al-Lakhmi narrated to us, who said: I heard 'Ikrimah say: I heard Ibn 'Abbas say: Every "sultan" (authority) in the Quran is a proof/argument. The hoopoe had a "sultan" in the statement of Solomon the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—: "Or he must bring me a clear authority."

16233 - My father narrated to us, Adam ibn Abi Iyas narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Husayn ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from 'Abdullah ibn Shaddad ibn al-Had, regarding "Or he must bring me a clear authority," meaning: with a clear excuse. When the hoopoe came, the birds met him and said: Yes, he has indeed said it, unless he comes with a clear excuse. So he brought him the excuse that is in the Quran.

16234 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Abi 'Umar narrated to us, who said: Sufyan said: Solomon inspected the hoopoe and said: "Where is he? I will surely punish him with a severe punishment or I will surely slaughter him" [up to] the end of the verse. When the hoopoe arrived, it was said to him: "Woe to you! What did the Prophet of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say regarding you?" He asked: "What did he say?" They replied: "He said, 'I will surely punish him with a severe punishment.'" He asked: "Did he make an exception?" They replied: "Yes, 'Or he must bring me a clear authority.'" He said: "Then I have been saved."

16235 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Dawraqi narrated to us, Waki' narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding "Or he must bring me a clear authority," he said: The news of the truth, the clear, honest statement.

His saying, the Almighty: "But he stayed not long"

16236 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Musa al-Harashi narrated to us, Abu Khalaf narrated to us, Yunus narrated to us, from al-Hasan, regarding "Or he must bring me a clear authority" with a clear excuse by which I would excuse him. He says: "But he stayed not long."
