man (the messenger) is a king who acts arrogantly, then he is not more powerful than us, nor better equipped." So she prepared for him gifts of the sort that are gifted to kings, from that which they are stingy with. She said: "If he is a king, he will accept the gift and desire wealth. And if he is a prophet, he will have no need for the world, nor does he want it; he only wants them to enter his religion and follow his command."
His saying, the Exalted: "So when he came to Sulayman."
16342 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Suwayd ibn Sa'id narrated to us, 'Ali ibn Mushir narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from the Minhal, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "So when he came to Sulayman," he said: When they entered upon him with her gift, he said: "Do you provide me with wealth?"
16343 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yazid ibn Ruman: "So when he came to Sulayman," he said: When the gifts came to Sulayman, they included maids and male servants, thoroughbred horses, and various worldly categories.
His saying, the Exalted: "He said: 'Do you provide me with wealth? But what Allah has given me is better than what He has given you.'"
16344 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Musa narrated to us, Ibn Abi Za'idah informed us, Ibn Abi Khalid informed us, from Abu Salih, who said: So Sulayman said: "Do you provide me with wealth?" He rejected it, and said: "Return to them, for we will surely come to them with armies they have no power to resist."
16345 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yazid ibn Ruman, regarding: "Do you provide me with wealth? But what Allah has given me is better than what He has given you," he said: He said to the messengers who brought it: "Do you provide me with wealth? But what Allah has given me is better than what He has given you."
His saying, the Exalted: "Nay, it is you who rejoice in your gift."
16346 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle narrated to me, my father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: She sent to them young male and female servants, and she dressed them in one uniform so that one would not be able to distinguish the male from the female, and she said: "If he distinguishes between them such that he knows the man from the woman, then he is a prophet, and it is incumbent upon us to leave our kingdom, follow his religion, and join him." Sulayman rejected the gift and distinguished between them, saying: "These are the boys and these are the girls." "He said: 'Do you provide me with wealth? But what Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. Nay, it is you who rejoice in your gift.'"
الرَّجُلُ مَلِكًا يُكَابِرُ فَلَيْسَ بِأَعَزَّ مِنَّا، وَلا أَعَدَّ فَهَيَّأَتْ لَهُ هَدَايَا مِمَّا تَهْدِي لِلْمُلُوكِ مِمَّا يَضِنُّونَ بِهِ فَقَالَتْ: إِنْ يَكُنَ مَلِكًا فَسَيَقْبَلُ الْهَدِيَّةَ وَيَرْغَبُ فِي الْمَالِ، وَإِنْ يَكُنْ نَبِيًّا فَلَيْسَ لَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا حَاجَةً وَلَيْسَ إِيَّاهَا يُرِيدُ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُدْخَلَ مَعَهُ فِي دِينِهِ وَيُتْبَعَ عَلَى أَمْرِهِ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: فَلَمَّا جَاءَ سُلَيْمَانَ
١٦٣٤٢ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنِ الْمِنْهَالِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ:
فَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ بِهَدِيَّتِهَا قَالَ أَتُمِدُّونَنِ بِمَالٍ
١٦٣٤٣ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا سَلَمَةُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ رُومَانَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ: فَلَمَّا أَتَتِ الْهَدَايَا سُلَيْمَانَ فِيهَا، الْوَصَائِفُ والوصيف، والخيل العراب وَأَصْنَافٌ مِنْ أَصْنَافِ الدُّنْيَا.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: قَالَ أَتُمِدُّونَنِ بِمَالٍ فَمَا آتَانِيَ اللَّهُ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا آتَاكُمْ
١٦٣٤٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُوسَى، أنبأ ابن أبي زائدة، أنبأ ابن أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ: أَتُمِدُّونَنِ بِمَالٍ فَرَدَّهَا، وَقَالَ ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهِمْ فَلَنَأْتِيَنَّهُمْ بِجُنُودٍ لَا قِبَلَ لَهُمْ بِهَا
١٦٣٤٥ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا سَلَمَةُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ رُومَانَ قَالَ أَتُمِدُّونَنِ بِمَالٍ فَمَا آتَانِيَ اللَّهُ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا آتَاكُمْ قَالَ لِلرُّسُلِ الَّذِينَ جَاءُوا بِهِ أَتُمِدُّونَنِ بِمَالٍ فَمَا آتَانِيَ اللَّهُ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا آتَاكُمْ بِهِ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: بَلْ أَنْتُمْ بِهَدِيَّتِكُمْ تَفْرَحُونَ
١٦٣٤٦ - أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنِي عَمِّي، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: وَبَعَثَتْ إِلَيْهِمْ بوصائف ووصفا، وألبستهم لباسا واحدا حتى لا يعرف ذكرا مِنْ أُنْثَى، فَقَالَتْ: إِنْ زَيَّلَ بَيْنَهُمْ حَتَّى يَعْرِفَ الرَّجُلَ مِنَ الأُنْثَى، ثُمَّ رَدَّ الْهَدِيَّةَ فَإِنَّهُ نَبِيُّ وَيَنْبَغِي لَنَا أَنْ نَتْرُكَ مُلْكَنَا وَنَتَّبِعَ دِينَهُ وَنَلْحَقَ بِهِ، فَرَدَّ سُلَيْمَانُ الْهَدِيَّةَ وزيل بينهم فقال: هؤلاء غلمان وهؤلاء جواري قَالَ أَتُمِدُّونَنِ بِمَالٍ فَمَا آتَانِيَ اللَّهُ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا آتَاكُمْ بَلْ أَنْتُمْ بِهَدِيَّتِكُمْ تَفْرَحُونَ
