ibn al-Furat, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, who said: "He who had knowledge from the Book said: 'I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you.'" He was a man from the Children of Israel who knew the Greatest Name of Allah, which, when He is called by it, He answers, and when asked by it, He gives. The returning of the glance is that one casts his sight as far as it reaches, then returns his glance. He said: So he called upon it, and when he saw it settled before him, he became apprehensive and said: 'A man other than me is capable of what is with Allah [that is, the knowledge and power given by Allah] more than I am.'
16403 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Abu al-Tahir narrated to us, Ibn Wahb informed us, Malik narrated to me, who said: It [the throne] was in Yemen, and Sulayman was in the Levant. When he saw it settled before him, he said: "This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful," and he recited this verse: "And for Solomon [We subjected] the wind—its morning [journey was that of] a month and its afternoon [journey was that of] a month."
His saying, the Exalted: "This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful."
16404 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Zuhayr ibn Muhammad narrated to us, regarding the saying of Allah: "To test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful," he said: "Grateful for the throne, in that I was brought it with such speed, or ungrateful, in that I saw one who is more knowledgeable than me in the world."
16405 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn 'Ali narrated to us, 'Amir narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, who said: Then Sulayman remembered and said: "This man is in my dominion and my kingdom; He [Allah] made me rule over him and placed him under me to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. Shall I not fulfill my gratitude for it?"
His saying, the Exalted: "And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous."
16406 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Zuhayr ibn Muhammad narrated to us, regarding the saying of Allah: "And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself," he said: Then Allah decreed gratitude for him, and said: "And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous."
16407 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas informed us, Yazid narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding "To test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful," he said: No, by Allah, he did not make it [a source of] pride, nor insolence, nor arrogance, but rather he made it gratitude, remembrance, and humility toward Allah.
