‘[And say,] O Messenger, convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord,’ and by Allah, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did not bequeath to us any [dark thing in a white thing].
His saying, the Almighty: “And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message.”
[6612] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu‘awiyah narrated to me, from Salih, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: “O Messenger, convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord. And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message,” meaning: If you conceal a single verse from that which was revealed to you from your Lord, you have not conveyed My message.
[6613] My father narrated to us, Qabisah ibn ‘Uqbah narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from a man, from Mujahid who said: When “O Messenger, convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord” was revealed, he said: O Lord, how shall I act while I am alone and they will gather against me? Then “And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message” was revealed.

[6614] Abu Sa‘id Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Sa‘id al-Qattan narrated to us, Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us, Musa ibn Sa‘id narrated to us, Zayd ibn Aslam informed me, from Jabir ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Ansari who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, raided the Banu Anmar, he camped at Dhat al-Riqa‘. While he was sitting on the edge of a well with his legs dangling, a man from the Banu Najjar said: I will certainly kill this man. His companions said to him: How will you kill him? I will say to him: Give me your sword. When he gives it to me, I will kill him with it. He came to him and said: O Muhammad, give me your sword so that I may examine it. He gave it to him, and his hand shook until the sword fell from his hand. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: Allah has intervened between you and what you desire. Then Allah, the Almighty, revealed: “O Messenger, convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord. And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people.”

[6615] Ibrahim ibn Marzuq al-Basri, a resident of Egypt, narrated to us, Muslim ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, al-Harith ibn ‘Ubayd Abu Qudamah narrated to us, from Sa‘id al-Jariri, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Shaqiq, from ‘A’ishah, who said:

قَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ وَاللَّهِ مَا وَرَّثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ (سَوْدَاءَ فِي بَيْضَاءَ) «١»

٦٦١٢ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ عَنْ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلَهُ: يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ وَإِنْ لم تفعل فما بلغت رسالته يَعْنِي إِنْ كَتَمْتَ آيَةً مِمَّا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ لَمْ تُبَلِّغْ رِسَالَتِي.
٦٦١٣ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا قبيصة ابن عُقْبَةَ ثنا سُفْيَانُ «٢» عَنْ رَجُلٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ قَالَ: يَا رَبِّ كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ وَأَنَا وَحْدِي يَجْتَمِعُونَ عَلَيَّ. فَنَزَلَتْ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلْ فَمَا بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَتَهُ

٦٦١٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ، ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الأَنْصَارِيِّ قَالَ: لَمَّا غَزَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَنِي أَنْمَارٍ نَزَلَ عَلَى ذات الرقيع «٣» نَخْلٍ فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ جَالِسٌ عَلَى رَأْسِ بِئْرٍ قَدْ دَلَّى رِجْلَيْهِ فَقَالَ: الْوَارِثُ «٤» مِنْ بَنِي النَّجَّارِ لأَقْتُلَنَّ هَذَا. فَقَالَ له أَصْحَابُهُ: كَيْفَ تَقْتُلُهُ، أَقُولُ لَهُ: أَعْطِنِي سَيْفَكَ، فَإِذَا أَعْطَانِيهِ قَتَلْتُهُ بِهِ، قَالَ: فَأَتَاهُ فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَعْطِنِي سَيْفَكَ أَشِيمُهُ «٥» فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ فَرُعِدَتْ يَدُهُ حَتَّى سَقَطَ السَّيْفُ مِنْ يَدِهِ. قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: حَالَ اللَّهُ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ مَا تُرِيدُ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلْ فَمَا بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَتَهُ وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ «٦»
