hasan (good) (29). Removing that which is pleasant is disliked, such as the blood of martyrs and the disheveled appearance of one in ihram. The second view is that it is not disliked; al-Nakha‘i, Ibn Sirin, ‘Urwa, Malik, and the Ashaab al-Ra’y granted a concession for it in the morning and the evening. This is also reported from ‘Umar, Ibn ‘Abbas, and ‘A’isha, may Allah be pleased with them, due to the generality of the ahadith narrated regarding the siwak, and the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Among the best qualities of the fasting person is the siwak." Recorded by Ibn Majah (30). ‘Amir ibn Rabi‘a said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) using the siwak while fasting more times than I could count (31). Al-Tirmidhi said: This is a hasan (good) hadith.
16 - Issue: He said: (And washing the hands if one wakes from sleep at night before inserting them into the vessel, three times). Washing the hands at the beginning of wudu is a sunnah in general, whether one has woken from sleep or not, because they are the parts that are submerged into the vessel and transfer the water of wudu to the limbs; therefore, washing them serves as a precaution (32) for the entire wudu. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to do this. Indeed, ‘Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, described the wudu of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), saying: He called for a vessel (33), then he poured over his palms three times and washed them, then he inserted his hand into the vessel. Agreed upon (34). Similarly, ‘Ali, ‘Abd Allah ibn Zayd, and others described it (35). This is not obligatory when not waking from sleep, by consensus.
