by the apparent meaning of the verse and by what Ibn Abbas narrated, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed ablution and inserted his hand into the vessel, then rinsed his mouth and inhaled water into his nose once, then inserted his hand and poured it onto his face once, and poured it onto his hands once (6), and wiped his head and ears once, then took a palmful of water and sprinkled it over his feet while he was wearing sandals (7). Narrated by Said. He also said: Hushaym told us, Yala ibn Ata informed us, from his father, who said: Aws ibn Abi Aws al-Thaqafi informed me that he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) come to a water reservoir (kizamah) of a group (8) in al-Ta'if, perform ablution, and wipe over his feet (9). Hushaym said: This was in the early days of Islam.
Our evidence is that Abdullah ibn Zayd and Uthman narrated the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and they both said: He washed his feet. In the hadith of Uthman: Then he washed both of his feet three times. Both are agreed upon (10). In another wording: Then he washed his right foot up to the ankles three times (11), then he washed the left one in the same manner. It was also narrated from Ali that he described the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: Then he washed his feet up to the ankles three times. The same was stated by al-Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh, al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, and Abdullah.
= that with the accusative (nasb) due to what that contains regarding the meaning of covering them by passing water over them. And the way of correctness of the recitation of whoever read it with the genitive (khafd) is due to what that contains regarding passing the hand over them, or what stands in the place of the hand, by wiping them. Tafsir al-Tabari (Shakir) 10/63. Perhaps the author’s quotation from Ibn Jarir is in the missing section of his book, Ikhtilaf al-Fuqaha.
(6) In the original: "once". (7) Al-Suyuti mentioned in the beginning of Musnad Ibn Abbas a hadith similar to this, though it differs in some of its wording. Al-Jami' al-Kabir 2/444, and he mentioned that Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded it, and it is with him in: The Chapter on Ablution: How Many Times, from the Book of Purifications 1/9. And see: The Chapter on Wiping the Ears with the Head, etc., from the Book of Purification. Al-Mujtaba min Sunan al-Nasa'i 1/63. Abu Dawud also recorded the hadith in a manner similar to what is mentioned here, in: The Chapter on Performing Ablution Twice, from the Book of Purification. Sunan Abi Dawud 1/30. (8) Al-Kizamah: A place for ablution, the mouth of a valley, or a well beside another well with a channel between them beneath the earth. (9) Recorded by Abu Dawud, in: The Chapter: Musaddad and 'Abbad ibn Musa told us, from the Book of Purification. Sunan Abi Dawud 1/36. And Imam Ahmad, in: al-Musnad 4/8. (10) In M: "upon him". (11) In the original: "three times".
