Section: The manifest view of the school of Ahmad is that the "large amount" that invalidates wudu' has no fixed limit other than it being "profuse" (fahishan). It was said: O Abu Abd Allah, what is the measure of the "profuse"? He replied: "That which you consider profuse in your heart." [It was said to him: Like what would the profuse amount be? [He said] Ibn Abbas said: "That which you consider profuse in your heart."] It has been reported from him that he was asked: How much is the large amount? He said: "A span by a span." In one place he said: "The amount of the palm is profuse." In another place he said: "That which necessitates wudu' from that is if it is the amount that a person can pick up with his five fingers of pus, serous fluid, and vomit; there is no harm in it." It was said to him: What if it is the amount of ten fingers? He considered that to be a large amount. Al-Khallal said: The settled opinion from him regarding the "profuse" is that it is according to the amount that every person considers profuse within himself. Ibn Aqil said: It is only judged by what is considered profuse among average people, not by the sloppy nor the obsessively scrupulous, just as we referred [the matter of] small lost items that do not require public announcement to that which the average person does not concern himself with. Ahmad's text on this is as we have related, and he adopted the position of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him.

Section: Pus and serous fluid are like blood in what we have mentioned, but they are easier and lighter in ruling according to Abu Abd Allah because of the difference of opinion regarding them. It is reported from Ibn Umar and al-Hasan that they did not consider pus and serous fluid to be like blood. Abu Mijlaz said regarding serous fluid: "There is nothing [no penalty], for Allah only mentioned flowing blood." Al-Awza'i said regarding an ulcer from which fluid flowed like the washings of meat: "There is no wudu' for it." Ishaq said: "Everything other than blood does not necessitate wudu'." Mujahid, Ata', Urwah, al-Sha'bi, al-Zuhri, Qatadah, al-Hakam, and al-Layth said: "Pus is in the same category as blood." Therefore, its ruling is lighter according to him [Ahmad], and his preferred choice nonetheless is to categorize it with blood and establish a similar ruling for it, but that which is considered profuse of it is more than that which is considered profuse of blood.
