then it is obligatory for him to perform ghusl, whether he performed ghusl before its exit or did not perform it; because it is semen that exited due to desire, thus it necessitates ghusl, just as if it had exited at the time of its movement. Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, said regarding a man who has intercourse but does not ejaculate, so he performs ghusl, then semen exits from him: He must perform ghusl. He was asked about a man who saw in a dream that he was having intercourse and woke up, but did not find anything, yet when he walked, semen exited from him; he said: He should perform ghusl. The Qadi said regarding the one who felt the movement of semen and restrained his penis, then performed ghusl, then semen exited from him without the accompaniment of desire after urination: No ghusl is required of him, in a single narration. But if it was before urination, there are two narrations; because after urination it is not the same semen that had moved, for it exited without desire, so it is like that which exits due to illness, whereas if it were before it, it is the same semen that had moved. Our evidence for what we hold is that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded ghusl upon seeing the fluid and forcing it out, and it has occurred. Ahmad explicitly stated the obligation of ghusl upon a person having intercourse who sees fluid after his ghusl, and this is similar to that. We have provided evidence that for one who feels the movement of semen but it does not exit, no ghusl is required of him, and it necessitates that ghusl becomes obligatory upon its appearance, so that this does not lead to the negation of the obligation entirely, given that the movement of semen occurred due to desire and it has exited.

Section: As for if a person has an erotic dream, or has intercourse, and ejaculates, then performs ghusl, then semen exits from him, the famous opinion from Ahmad is that no ghusl is required of him. Al-Khallal said: The narrations from Abu Abd Allah [Ahmad] have reached the level of tawatur (successive transmission) that he has nothing but wudu (ablution) to perform, whether he urinated or did not urinate, and upon this his opinion settled. This is also narrated from Ali, Ibn Abbas, Ata, al-Zuhri, Malik, al-Layth, al-Thawri, and Ishaq. Said ibn Jubayr said: No ghusl is required of him except if it is due to desire. There is a second narration regarding this: If it exits after urination, there is no ghusl, but if it exits before it, he must perform ghusl. This is the opinion of al-Awza'i and Abu Hanifa, and it was reported from al-Hasan; because it is the remainder of the fluid that exited with emission and desire, thus it necessitates ghusl like the first. After urination, it exited without emission and desire, and we do not know that it is the remainder of the first, because if it were the remainder, it would not have been delayed until after urination. The Qadi said: There is a third narration, that he is upon him
