ghusl in all circumstances. This is the school of al-Shafi'i, because the consideration is given to its exit, like all other hadath (ritual impurities). He said in another place: No ghusl is required of him, in a single narration; because it is one single janaba (major ritual impurity), so two ghusls are not necessitated by it, just as if it had exited all at once. The correct opinion is the first, because the exit is valid as an obligation for ghusl, and what he mentioned is invalidated by the case where one has intercourse but does not ejaculate, so he performs ghusl, then ejaculates. For Ahmad has explicitly stated the obligation of ghusl upon him by the ejaculation, along with its obligation by the contact of the two circumcised parts.
Section: If one sees that he has had an erotic dream but does not find semen, then no ghusl is required of him. Ibn al-Mundhir said: All the scholars whom I have memorized from are in agreement on this. However, if he walks and semen exits from him, or it exits after he wakes up, then he must perform ghusl. Ahmad explicitly stated this, because the apparent situation is that it had moved, and its exit was delayed until after waking. If he awakens and sees semen but does not recall an erotic dream, he must perform ghusl. We know of no disagreement regarding this either. Something similar was narrated from Umar and Uthman, and this is the opinion of Ibn Abbas, Ata, Said ibn Jubayr, al-Sha'bi, al-Nakha'i, al-Hasan, Mujahid, Qatada, Malik, al-Shafi'i, and Ishaq; because the apparent situation is that its exit was due to an erotic dream which he forgot. It was narrated from Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that he prayed the dawn prayer with the people, then went out to al-Jurf and saw an erotic dream residue on his garment, so he said: I do not see myself but that I have had an erotic dream. He performed ghusl, washed his garment, and prayed. Similar accounts were narrated from Uthman. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated that she said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was asked about a man who finds wetness but does not recall an erotic dream? He said: "He performs ghusl." And about a man who sees that he has had an erotic dream but does not find wetness, he said: "No ghusl is required of him." Narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah.
