Sulaym said: O Messenger of Allah, is a woman required to perform ghusl if she has an erotic dream? He said: "Yes, if she sees the liquid." Muttafaq alayh (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim). This indicates that she is not required to perform ghusl unless she sees the liquid.

Section: If one awakens from sleep and finds wetness, but does not know whether it is semen or something else, Ahmad said: If he finds wetness, he performs ghusl, unless he suffers from constant discharge (ibridah) or has been fondling his spouse; for often madhy (pre-seminal fluid) exits from him, and I hope there is no harm in that. Likewise, if he had an erection at the beginning of the night due to recalling [the act] or seeing [something], no ghusl is required of him. This is the view of al-Hasan, because it is a matter of doubt; it is possible that it is madhy, and its cause has been found, so it does not necessitate ghusl while there is doubt. If he had not experienced that, he must perform ghusl due to the report of Aisha, and because the apparent situation is that it was an erotic dream. Ahmad hesitated on this issue in several places. Mujahid and Qatada said: No ghusl is required of him until he is certain of the ejaculated liquid. Qatada said: He should smell it. This is in accordance with analogy (qiyas), and because certainty lies in the continuation of tahara (ritual purity), which is not removed by doubt. It is better to perform ghusl to comply with the report and remove doubt.

Section: If he sees semen on his garment, and it is a garment that no one else sleeps in, he must perform ghusl because Umar and Uthman performed ghusl when they saw it on their garments, and because it is unlikely to be from anyone else. He must repeat the prayers of the most recent sleep in which he slept in it, unless he sees an indication that it was before that, in which case he repeats from the earliest sleep it could have possibly come from. If the one who sees it is a young boy from whom the existence of semen is possible, such as a twelve-year-old, then he is like a man, because evidence of it exists and its existence is possible. If he is younger than that, then no ghusl is required of him, because it is not possible [for it to be his], so it is certain that it must be attributed to someone else. As for if a man finds semen in a garment in which he and another who might have an erotic dream sleep, then no ghusl is required of either of them, because for each one of them, when viewed individually, it is possible that it is not
