for the completion of her menstruation, and she performs wudu' for every prayer. This is the view of 'Ata', al-Nakha'i, and the majority of scholars, on the basis that the ghusl is [to be performed] at the conclusion of menstruation, then she must perform wudu' for every prayer, and that suffices her. This is narrated from 'Urwa, and it is the view of al-Shafi'i and the scholars of opinion (ashab al-ra'y). 'Ikrama, Rabi'a, and Malik said: She is only required to perform ghusl upon the completion of her menstruation, and she has no wudu' for the isti'hada; because the manifest meaning of the hadith of Hisham ibn 'Urwa, from his father, from 'A'isha, in the hadith of Fatima bint Abi Hubaysh, is [that she performs] only ghusl; for the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to her: "Perform ghusl and pray," and he did not mention wudu' for every prayer. Our evidence is [the statement of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to Fatima]: "That is but a vein, and it is not menstruation. When it (menstruation) approaches, cease praying, and when it recedes, wash the blood from yourself and pray, and perform wudu' for every prayer." Al-Tirmidhi said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. This is an addition that must be accepted. Also in the hadith of 'Adi ibn Thabit, from his father, from his grandfather, from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, regarding the mustahada: "She shall cease praying during the days of her customary cycle, then she performs ghusl and prays, and performs wudu' at every prayer." And because it is blood exiting from the private part, it necessitates wudu', just like the blood of menstruation. This indicates that the ghusl commanded in the other hadiths is recommended, not obligatory, but performing ghusl for every prayer is superior; because it involves exiting a state of scholarly disagreement, and adopts the safer and more cautious approach, and it is the most stringent of what has been said. Following this in terms of merit and hardship is to combine every two prayers with one ghusl, and to perform ghusl for the dawn prayer, and that is why the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said regarding it: "And it is the more pleasing of the two matters to me." Then, following this, is to perform ghusl once every day, then after that, performing ghusl upon the cessation of menstruation, then she performs wudu' for every prayer, which is the least of the matters, and it suffices her. And Allah knows best.
