He may remove one of his sandals and throw it to her. Abu Dawood recorded, with his chain of narration from a man among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), that when Ali married Fatimah, he wished to consummate the marriage with her, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade him until he gave her something. He said: O Messenger of Allah, I have nothing. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: "Give her your shield." So he gave it to her, then consummated the marriage with her. Ibn Abbas also narrated it, saying: When Ali married Fatimah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: "Give her something." He said: I have nothing. He said: "Where is your Hutamiyyah shield?" Recorded by Abu Dawood and al-Nasa'i. Our argument is the hadith of Uqbah ibn Amir regarding the man whom the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) married off, and he consummated the marriage with her without giving her anything. Aisha also narrated, saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered me to bring a woman to her husband before he had given her anything. Recorded by Ibn Majah. Furthermore, it is a compensation in a contract of exchange, so the permissibility of handing over the object of exchange is not contingent upon taking possession of any part of it, like the price in a sale or the wage in a lease. As for the reports [to the contrary], they are interpreted as meaning recommendation; for it is recommended that he gives her something before consummation in accordance with the reports, in accordance with the custom of people among themselves, and so that the mufawwada may be distinguished from the state of one who is gifted.

يَخْلَعُ إِحْدَى نَعْلَيْه، ويُلْقِيها إليها (١٥). وقد رَوَى أبو داودَ (١٦)، بإسنادِه عن رَجُلٍ من أصْحابِ النَّبِىِّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا لما تَزَوَّجَ فاطمةَ، أراد أن يَدْخُلَ بها، فمَنَعه رسولُ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- حتى يُعْطِيهَا شيئا، فقال: يا (١٧) رسولَ اللَّه، ليس لى شىءٌ. فقال له النبىُّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-: "أَعْطِها دِرْعَكَ". فأعْطاها دِرْعَه، ثم دَخَلَ بها. وروَاه ابنُ عباسٍ أيضًا، قال: لما تزوَّجَ علىٌّ فاطمةَ، قال له رسولُ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-: "أعْطِهَا شَيْئًا". قال: ما عِنْدِى. قال: "أيْنَ دِرْعُكَ الحُطَمِيَّةُ (١٨)؟ ". رَوَاه أبو داودَ، والنَّسائىُّ (١٩). ولَنا، حَدِيثُ عُقْبةَ بن عامرٍ، فى الذى زَوجَه النَّبِىُّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-، ودَخَلَ بها (٢٠) ولم يُعْطِها شيئًا (٢١). ورَوَتْ عائشةُ، قالتْ: أمرنى رسولُ اللَّه -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- أن أُدْخِلَ امرأةً على زَوْجِها، قبلَ أن يُعْطيهَا شيئًا. روَاه ابنُ ماجَه (٢٢). ولأنه عِوَضٌ فى عَقْدِ مُعاوَضةٍ، فلم يَقفْ جَوازُ تَسْلِيمِ المُعَوَّضِ (٢٣) على قَبْضِ شىءٍ منه، كالثمنِ فى البَيْعِ، والأُجْرَةِ فى الإِجارَةِ. وأمَّا الأخْبارُ فمَحْمُولةٌ على الاسْتِحْبابِ، فإنَّه يُسْتَحَبُّ أن يُعْطِيهَا قبلَ الدُّخولِ شيئًا، مُوافَقةً للأخْبارِ، ولعادَةِ الناس فيما بينهم، ولِتَخْرُجَ المُفَوّضةُ عن شِبْهِ المَوْهُوبةِ،
