On the authority of Abū Saʿīd, he said: When the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) ate food, he would say: "Praise be to Allah, who has fed us, given us drink, and made us Muslims." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd (45). On the authority of Abū Umāmah, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), that he used to say when his food was lifted: "Praise be to Allah, abundantly, with blessings in it, neither sufficient, nor abandoned, nor independent of, O our Lord." On the authority of Muʿādh ibn Anas al-Juhanī, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), who said: "Whoever eats food and says: 'Praise be to Allah who fed me this and provided it for me, without any might or power from me,' will have his past sins forgiven." These were narrated by Ibn Mājah (46). It is narrated that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) ate food, he and Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, then he said: "Whoever says at the beginning of it: 'In the name of Allah, and the blessing of Allah,' and at the end of it: 'Praise be to Allah, who fed, quenched, favored, and excelled,' has indeed fulfilled its gratitude (47)." It is recommended to supplicate for the host of the food, based on what Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated, who said: Abū al-Haytham made food for the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and his companions, and he invited the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and his companions. When they finished, he said: "Reward your companion." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is his reward?" He said: "When a man enters his house, his food is eaten, and his drink is drunk, then they pray for him; that is his reward." On the authority of Anas, that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came to Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah, he said: So he brought bread and oil, and he ate. Then the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "The fasting have broken their fast with you (48), the righteous have eaten your food, and the angels have prayed for you."
