the sword of the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was made of silver. Narrated by al-Athram, Abu Dawud, and al-Tirmidhi (11), who said: It is a hasan (good) hadith. Hisham ibn 'Urwa said: The sword of al-Zubayr was adorned with silver; I have seen it. There is no harm in a silver ring, because the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had a silver ring that he wore (12), then Abu Bakr wore it, then 'Umar, then 'Uthman, until it fell from him into the well of Aris (13). This is authenticated from them. Sa'id said: 'Wear the ring, and inform them that I have given you a fatwa for that.' It has been reported (14) by Abu Rayhana from the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he disliked ten traits, among which is the ring, unless one is a ruler (15). Ahmad said: 'This is only narrated by the people of al-Sham (Syria).' Ahmad was informed of the hadith of Abu Rayhana, and when he reached the [mention of the] ring, he smiled as if in wonder, then said: 'The people of al-Sham.' Ahmad only said that because the hadiths have been authenticated from the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and have become widespread regarding its permissibility, and the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the scholars after them have reached a consensus upon it. Thus, if a rare (shadh) hadith comes that contradicts this, it is not relied upon, and if it is authenticated, it is interpreted as [a matter of] tanzih (dislike without prohibition).
Section: Al-Athram said: Abu 'Abd Allah was asked about adornment for the sword belt (hamail), so he made it easy, saying: 'It has been reported that [there was] an adorned sword.' And because it is part of the adornment of the sword, it is like the pommel. Likewise (16)...
