Section: Excessive swearing by Allah, the Almighty, is disliked (makruh) due to the saying of Allah, the Almighty: {And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer} (32). This is a condemnation of him, which necessitates the dislike of his action. If it does not reach the level of excess, it is not disliked, unless it is accompanied by something that necessitates its dislike. Some people have said (33): All oaths are disliked because of the saying of Allah, the Almighty: {And do not make Allah an obstacle in your oaths} (34). Our position is that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to swear frequently, and he would sometimes swear many oaths within a single hadith, and perhaps he would repeat the same oath three times. In the sermon for the Eclipse (Khutbat al-Kusuf), he said: "By Allah, O community of Muhammad, there is no (35) one who has more protective jealousy than Allah that His male servant should commit adultery or His female servant should commit adultery. O community of Muhammad, by Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much" (36). A woman from the Ansar met him with her children, and he said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you are indeed the most beloved of people to me," three times (37). He also said: "By Allah, I will certainly fight the Quraysh; by Allah, I will certainly fight the Quraysh; by Allah, I will certainly fight the Quraysh" (38). If this were disliked, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would have been the furthest of all people from it. Furthermore, swearing by Allah is an act of aggrandizing Him, and he may add to his oath a description of Allah, the Almighty, in terms of His aggrandizement and oneness (tawhid), in which case he would be rewarded for that. It has been narrated that a man swore regarding something, saying: "By Allah, the One besides Whom there is no god, I did not do such-and-such." The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Know that he has lied, but (39) he has been forgiven for his tawhid" (40). As for excessive swearing, it is only disliked because it rarely avoids containing falsehood. And Allah knows best. As for His saying: {And do not make Allah an obstacle...
