that we would conquer them that day. We kept coming and going, and a slave of ours remained, and he spoke to them in their language and they spoke to him in theirs. He wrote an aman (safe conduct) for them on a piece of paper, tied it to an arrow, and shot it toward them; they took it and came out. He wrote to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab about this, and he said: 'The Muslim slave is a man from among the Muslims; his sanctuary (dhimmah) is their sanctuary.' Narrated by Sa'id. And because he is a legally responsible Muslim, his safe conduct is valid, just like that of a free man. What they mentioned regarding suspicion is nullified by the case where he is given permission to fight, for then his safe conduct is valid; and also by the case of a woman, for her safe conduct is valid according to all of them. 'A'ishah said: 'A woman would grant protection (ijarah) on behalf of the Muslims, and it is valid.' From Umm Hani', she said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have granted protection to my in-laws and closed my doors upon them, and my brother's son wanted to kill them.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to her: 'We have granted protection to whom you have granted protection, O Umm Hani'. Indeed, the lowliest among the Muslims grants protection on their behalf.' Narrated by both by Sa'id. Zaynab, daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), granted protection to Abu al-'As ibn al-Rabi', and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) upheld it.
