satirized the Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) and the Muslims (94). Ka'b ibn Zuhayr recited to him the poem:
in the mosque (95). His uncle al-Abbas said to him: "O Messenger of God, I wish to praise you in poetry." He said: "Speak, may God not break your mouth." He then recited to him:
Before that, you were pure in the shadows and in
A repository where the leaves are bound (96)
'Amr ibn al-Sharid said: "The Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) had me ride behind him and asked: 'Do you have any of Umayyah's poetry?' I said: 'Yes.' I recited a verse to him, and he said: 'Go on.' I recited a verse, and he said: 'Go on.' until I recited one hundred rhymes to him (97)." On the day of Hunayn, the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) said:
I am the Prophet, there is no lie
I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib (98)
There is a difference of opinion regarding this; it is said: It is not poetry, rather it is metered speech. It is also said: It is indeed poetry, but it is a single short line, so it is like prose. It is narrated (99) that it was said to Abu al-Darda': "There is no household among the Ansar but that they have spoken poetry." He said: "And I, too, have spoken it:
Man wishes to be granted his desires
But God refuses save what He has willed
Man says: My wealth and my profit
But the fear of God is the best of what one gains"

هَجَا رَسولَ اللَّهِ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- والمسلمينَ (٩٤). وأنْشَدَه كَعْبُ بنُ زُهَيرٍ قَصِيدةَ:
* بَانَتْ سُعَادُ فَقَلْبِى الْيَومَ مَتْبُولُ *
فى المسجدِ (٩٥). وقالَ له عمُّه العبَّاسُ: يا رسولَ اللَّهِ، إنِّى أُريدُ أَنْ أمْتَدِحَكَ. فقال: "قُلْ، لَا يَفْضُضِ اللَّهُ فاكَ". فأنْشدَه:
مِنْ قَبْلِها طِبْتَ فِى الظِّلالِ وفى ... مُسْتَوْدَعٍ حيثُ يُخْصَفُ الوَرَقُ (٩٦)
وقال عمرُو بنُ الشَّرِيدِ: أرْدَفَنى رسولُ اللَّهِ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- فقال: "أَمَعَكَ مِنْ شِعْرِ أُمَيَّةَ؟ ". قلتُ: نعم. فأنشَدْتُه بيتًا، فقالَ: "هِيهِ". فأنشَدْتُه بيتًا، فقالَ: "هِيهِ". حتى أنشدتُه مِائَةَ قَافيةٍ (٩٧). وقال النَّبِىُّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- يومَ حُنَيْنٍ:
أَنَا النَّبِىُّ لَا كَذِبْ
أَنَا ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبْ (٩٨)
وقد اخْتُلِفَ فى هذا، فقيل: ليس بشِعرٍ، وإنُّما هو كَلامٌ مَوزُونٌ. وقيلَ: بل هو شِعرٌ، ولكنَّه بَيْتٌ واحدٌ قَصيرٌ، فهو كالنَّثْرِ. ويُرْوَى (٩٩) أَنَّ أبا الدَّرْداءِ قِيلَ له: ما مِن أهلِ بيتٍ فى الأنْصارِ، إِلَّا وقد قالَ الشِّعْرَ. قالَ: وأنا قد قُلْتُ:
