[Chapter on the Etiquette of Walking to Prayer]
It is recommended for a man, when he comes to prayer, to approach with fear, trepidation, humility, and submissiveness, carrying with him tranquility and dignity. If he hears the iqama, he should not hasten toward it, because of what Abu Hurayra narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, that he said: "If you hear the iqama, walk with tranquility and dignity. Whatever you catch, pray, and whatever you miss, complete." And from Abu Qatada, who said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, he heard the noise of men. When he prayed, he said: "What is the matter with you?" They said: We hurried to the prayer. He said: "Do not do so. When you come to the prayer, you must have tranquility. Whatever you catch, pray, and whatever you miss, complete." Both are agreed upon. In one narration: "So perform (what you missed)." Imam Ahmad said: There is no harm if one hopes to catch the first takbir to hasten slightly, provided it is not an unseemly haste.
