it has reached the measure of the person, then the time for the Zhuhr prayer has ended. The equivalent of a person's height is six and a half feet by his own foot, or slightly more. If you wish to verify the increase by your foot, measure it according to what we mentioned regarding the decline, then subtract from it the amount that the sun had declined upon. If the remainder reaches six and a half feet, it has reached the equivalent, and that is the end of the time for the Zhuhr prayer and the beginning of the time for the ʿAṣr prayer. Mālik, al-Thawrī, al-Shāfiʿī, and al-Awzāʿī said this, and Abū Yūsuf, Muḥammad, and Abū Thawr and Dāwūd said something similar. ʿAṭāʾ said: There is no negligence for the Zhuhr [prayer] until the sun becomes yellow. Ṭāwūs said: The time for the Zhuhr and ʿAṣr [prayers] is until the night. It was narrated from Mālik: The time of choice is until the shadow of everything becomes equal to it, and the time of performance is until there remains from the sunset the amount in which the ʿAṣr [prayer] can be performed; because the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, combined the Zhuhr and ʿAṣr [prayers] while resident. Abū Ḥanīfah said: The time for the Zhuhr [prayer] is until the shadow of everything becomes equal to it; because the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: "Your example and the example of the People of the Two Books is like a man who hired a worker, and said: Who will work for me from the morning until midday for a qīrāṭ? The Jews worked. Then he said: Who will work for me from midday until the ʿAṣr prayer for a qīrāṭ? The Christians worked. Then he said: Who will work for me from the ʿAṣr [prayer] until sunset for two qīrāṭs? You are they. The Jews and Christians became angry and said: Why do we have more work and less pay? He said: Have I cheated you of your right? They said: No. He said: That is My bounty which I give to whom I will." Narrated by al-Bukhārī. (1) This indicates that from the Zhuhr [prayer] to the ʿAṣr [prayer] is more than from the ʿAṣr [prayer] to the Maghrib [prayer].
Our evidence is that Jibrīl, peace be upon him, prayed the Zhuhr [prayer] with the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, when the shade was like
