Section: Whoever catches the Imam in the state of bowing (ruku') has caught the rak'ah (15), because of the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: "Whoever catches the bowing has caught the rak'ah." Narrated by Abu Dawud (16). This is because he has not missed any of the pillars except for the standing (qiyam), and he performs that [standing] along with the opening takbir, then catches the remainder of the rak'ah with the Imam. This applies if he catches the Imam in the state of tranquility during the bowing, or if he reaches the point of validity of the bowing before the Imam departs from the point of validity. Thus, this is counted for him as a rak'ah, and he is considered to have caught it. However, if the follower bows while the Imam is rising, it does not suffice him, and he must perform the takbir while standing upright. If he performs it after having reached the point of bowing in his inclination or part of it, it does not suffice him, because he performed it outside of its proper place, except in the case of a voluntary (nafilah) prayer, for he misses the standing, which is one of the pillars of the prayer. Then he performs another takbir for the bowing during his descent toward it. The first [takbir] is a pillar that cannot be dropped under any circumstances, and the second is the takbir for bowing. What is narrated from Ahmad is that it [the second] drops here, and a single takbir suffices him. This was reported by Abu Dawud and Salih. This was also narrated (17) from Zayd ibn Thabit, Ibn 'Umar, Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, 'Ata', al-Hasan, Maymun ibn Mihran (18), al-Nakha'i, al-Hakam, al-Thawri, al-Shafi'i, Malik, and the scholars of opinion (ashab al-ra'y). It is narrated from 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz that he must perform two takbirs. This is the view of Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman. The manifest [meaning] is that they both intended that it is better for him to perform two takbirs, so their statement would not contradict the statement of the group, for 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz.
