‘Ammar ibn Abi ‘Ammar (7) said: The mosque of the Ansar used to perform two taslims, and the mosque of the Emigrants (Muhajirin) used to perform one taslim. [Based on what] (8) ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated, she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to perform a single taslim directly in front of him. From Salamah ibn al-Akwa’, he said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pray (9) and he performed the taslim once (10)." Both were recorded by Ibn Majah (11). Furthermore, because the first taslim effectively exits one from the prayer, anything after it is not prescribed, just as a third one would not be (12). Our evidence is what Ibn Mas‘ud narrated, saying: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) perform the taslim until the whiteness of his cheek could be seen, to his right and to his left. Also, from Jabir ibn Samurah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "It is sufficient for any of you to place his hand on his thigh, then perform the salutation to his brother on his right and on his left." Both were recorded by Muslim (13). In one version of the hadith of Ibn Mas‘ud: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to perform the taslim to his right by saying, "Assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah," and to his left by saying, "Assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah."
